Product Description

Critical Lives: Malcolm X will cover: the childhood of Malcolm Little in the Depression-era Midwest; the rise and fall of "Detroit Red"—Malcolm's chaotic adolescence as a petty criminal and street hustler; the prison years—the rebellious, angry, headstrong inmate they called Satan; Malcolm's religious and social allegiance with the Black Muslims (Nation of Islam); the founding and editing by Malcolm of the Nation of Islam (NOI) national newspaper; Malcolm as organizer, teacher, and political advocate—and Malcolm as husband and father; from Malcolm X to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbazz—his attacks on the Civil Rights Movement and his break with the NOI; and the final year—the surveillance by the FBI and CIA, the assassination at the Audobon Ballroom.

This is not a bad book, it is well written and interesting, but lacks alot of detail and important aspects of Malcolm's life. I bought this book hoping it would be useful for my dissertaion on Malcolm X. Instead I found that it lacked any details or discussion about X's political development in the final year of his life- probably the most important era for Malcolm X. If you want to know what books to read on Malcolm I would recommend his 'Autobiogrphy' and Breitman's 'Final Year of Malcolm X'.

Excellent, well-written biography 28 Nov 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This biography not only covers the crucial events of Malcolm X's life, but it also provides a historical context for them. The author really tries to give you a sense of what was happening in the U.S. socially and politically from Malcolm's birth to his death. Through his excelling writing, you get a real understanding of what was going on at the time. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Malcolm X, the Civil Rights Movement, or American History.

Malcolm X Deserves Better 21 Oct 2010
By coolelle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Such a great man and forward thinker deserves a more nuanced and subtle biography than this. The writing is ham-handed and thick, with gross characterizations and unoriginal observations.
