Product Description

What was it like to live in a Victorian household? What time did the servants have to get up? What was the food like and who cooked it? How did the clothing differ for the different types of servants? How much did the servants get paid? This fascinating book takes you back in time and shows you what it was really like to live in Victorian times, for those both above and below stairs, and what sights and smells would be around you.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting read 22 Jan 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
As a Downton Abbey fan I thought I would try this book out.
It was an eye opener as to how the downstairs staff were really treated by the upstairs employers. 18hr days ,poor living conditions and sacked at the drop of a hat.

Not quite Downton!!

A very interesting read

This book is very informative it is no way a novel but basic information and snippets from people who actually did the job. I found it a good read so I would recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars very one sided
The title of this book is misleading. It deals entirely with domestic service in the nineteenth century, but has very little to say about the employers of these servants. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read
A difficult read, that did not really deliver. More of a social history read than an insight into life below stairs, it's sagas and endurance. Read more
