Product Description

While hardly marking the evolutionary coup that the title may suggest, ex-Inspiral Carpet Clint Boon's sophomore album nevertheless witnesses a stylistic shift from the novelty-pop raspberry that was the debut Compact Guide to Pop Music And Space Travel. There is still the sense of knockabout fervour that made Compact... so entertaining, but now we find Boon and gang indulging in everything from would-be sophisticated cabaret-fantasy ("17 & Over") and twinkly doo-wop ("Do What You Do") to clever, punk-funk word-plays ("Kids Get Kicks"). The Experience's trump card, however, remains their absolute refusal to entertain life's downside; a fact that renders Life in Transition a refreshingly irony-free antidote to the current rash of introspective misery merchants. This is pop with brains. --Sarah Dempster

Despite the collapse of the Inspiral Carpets in the early nineties, Clint Boon was always determined to make a musical comeback. This, his second album, is again a innovative and fantastically fun album. Not deterred by the accident in April 1999 when the tour bus tyres' exploded on their way up to Glasgow and the lives of several members of the gang were put in danger, this album is again, much like the first, a refreshing change from much of the guitar heavy or angsty music that is popularly heard today. Indeed this music is best heard live, and only then can you be fully described as a member of the 'Boon Army'. But this albumis a useful indicator to at least the music which will be encountered at a gig. Popular tracks such as 'Kids get Kicks' and 'Me I'm just a girl' are superb, while the slower songs are nevertheless compelling. Buy this album, See them live, and a message to you Mr Boon, play them tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fine album 4 Dec 2000
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Boon revolution continues. Once again, an album of varied styles, including a very funky track (the title track), a duet with Fran Healy and a slow song with operatic parts as well as the pure rock of Climbing Back Inside A Dream.
The main weakness of the first album was the opening and closing tracks which lasted far too long - this time they are 3 minutes each and the one at the end is actually good.
You need to see them live though - oh, and I'm the one in the bright purple shirt.

4.0 out of 5 stars boon hits the tune 2 Mar 2011

As quirky as the first CBX album and equally as enjoyable. A few duff tracks which sound a bit dated but worth a pop overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now for something completely different 27 July 2008

This group knocked my socks off when I heard it on XM radio. So I bought the CD, obviously. Well, uh, hmmm, to be honest.... only the 1st and last tracks really stayed with me. They expressed an original viewpoint and I found them almost haunting in their beauty.

That's what this album, plain and simple, not stupid fun, rather intelligent off-beat fun.
