Life on Tilt is a novel about those interests that have equal potential to complete or destroy us. It's a delicate balance. Poker is the telescope through which to explore this universal tension, and the game is used throughout the novel as a catalyst for change, conflict and character development. The protagonist, Johnnoe Zandoken, is leading a double life. He is part family man, part poker aficionado. As his marriage withers and his poker prowess grows, this conflict worsens. Will he risk his fragile marriage to pursue his dream of participating in the richest sporting event in history? Will the freshness and allure of the poker world trump his comfortable home life? Will he turn to a flirtatious Russian model for escape? Will he reconcile his unquenchable ambition with his personal and professional commitments? Most importantly, will he decide what really matters before all his options are gone?
About the Author
John Blowers is the creative force behind Life on Tilt. He is a semi-professional writer and poker player. Semi because he has a "real job" and professional because he's made some money at both hobbies. Creating a fictional autobiography requires equal parts chutzpah and fantasy...something John never finds himself short of. He looks forward to documenting Johnnoe Zandoken's further adventures in the sequel Life After Tilt.John has written several short stories, some poetry, a murder-mystery game and a short play. This is his first full-length novel.

What more can you want?

I'm not a big gambler but I've felt that edge - that tilt - when I've been in friendly games of poker and low stakes blackjack at the casinos. Life on Tilt lets that fantasy ride for guys like me who haven't gone over to the other side but can imagine the temptations. I thought it was great how Blowers' narrator leads you through his double life, business-man / family-man - high stakes poker player. You see the risks he takes, even more so away from the table, and you can relate to the chase of the glitz. I loved the humor, the tension, the intoxication of that self-awareness / self-destruction cocktail, and ultimately the almost 40s film noir sense of fateful doom. What more can you want in a cautionary tale that beckons you to go to hell anyway?

Great book for a poker lover

As a avid poker player, the story uncomfortably real at times. Blowers does a great job telling an engaging story while making the reader consider their own choices of family, passions, etc. Really great book. I enjoyed it. If you know a poker player, this is a great gift.

A Great Novel with Contemporary Significance

Young women with desires and aspirations give up their dreams when they begin a family and become the oft-minivanned Soccer Moms. Today, an unprecedented (and rather inexplicable) rise in the game of Poker among male teens and male adults have given rise to a new brand--Poker Dads. LIFE ON TILT is a great story about the game of poker--with all of its temptations for fame/riches and the carelessness/ignorance of loss that these temptations bring to a head. What makes this story even greater is its application to a father (the protagonist in the story). The traditional notion of the father as the leader of the family is challenged in this book by how he is instead lead by a lust for a game. This is an interesting and exciting story with interesting correlations to the assumed role of the father in today's fast culture of mixed values.
