Product Description

Life? or Theatre? Is the title Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) gave to a sequence of nearly 800 small gouaches which she created between 1940 and 1942. The gouaches form a work of art, subtitled 'a play with music' which combines images, texts and musical references to recreate a life marked both by personal tragedy and external political events.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary 24 Nov 2010
This astonishing book, like Nemirovsky's Suite Francaise, sees the author document, in real time, the gradual erasing of their right to be. One of my most treasured books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life + Theatre = Art 26 Dec 2013
This book does wonderful justice to the life and art of Charlotte Salomon, whether one has seen her stunning original gouaches or not. This fat, heavy, beautifully produced volume reproduces the complete set in convincingly vibrant colours. The book also gives us several introductory essays by authoritative scholars and curators, outlining Charlotte's life and work in the context of traumatic family history and the wider disaster of Jews during the Nazi era. While her terrible fate at Auschwitz adds great poignancy to the achievement of one cut off so young, the originality and beauty of her art as represented in this book is an enduring testimony to her courage and skill.

4.0 out of 5 stars but I don't love it. 4 July 2014
By Bruce C. Fox - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I went to an exhibit of Salomon's drawings at a museum in San Francisco. My friend was clearly taken with them. The bookstore only had a pamphlet of the current exhibit, not a book. Bookstore agent assured me that there was no compendium of her work for sale. I reasoned that it must exist, just that it was too hard for the museum to come up with copies. So I looked on Amazon as soon as possible, and there it was. It's a tragic story of WWII, done up in a sensitive style with minimum equipment. The woman dies in the camps (we find out later on). So it is important, but I don't love it.
