First bought the LP, and then the CD and finally the book. Initially, it's hard not to hear Ivor's voice reading in the Third Eye Centre. It's also strange to have the episodes in numerical order, without the Jungle Tips. Honeysett's drawings are a wonderful compensation.
Ivor had such an extraordinary view of life, and a vividly imaginative memory for what life might have been like when he was a child - three generations in a single room, and no facilities, indoor or out.
But it's his gift for economy of phrase that impresses most, to say so much with so few words, each episode barely two short pages. Although this is prose, the dense richness is close to poetry.
Honeysett's drawings are a grotesque delight, lest the mind's eye becomes too sentimental.
All Ivor's books are delightfully small in an age of 1,000 page blockbusters. Savour every word, every image conjured. Read it over and over again, and laugh out loud.
