Product Description

Fascinating, even sensational reading. --New York Times

Product Description

A remarkable account of a wildly artistic life, finally restored to its unexpurgated form, with a revealing new introduction by Joan Acocella.

The visionary choreographer and dancer Isadora Duncan (1877–1927) not only revolutionized dance in the twentieth century but blazed a path for other visionaries who would follow in her wake. While many biographies have explored Duncan’s crucial role as one of the founders of modern dance, no other book has proved as critical—as both historical record and vivid evocation of a riveting life—as her autobiography. From her early enchantment with classical music and poetry to her great successes abroad, to her sensational love affairs and headline-grabbing personal tragedies, Duncan’s story is a dramatic one. My Life still stands alone as “a great document, revealing the truth of her life as she understood it, without reticence or apology or compromise” (New York Herald Tribune). Now, in this fully restored edition, with its risqué recollections and fervent idealism, My Life can be appreciated by a new generation.

The headline says it all. Without pictures the story is flat. She may have been able to dance, but she could not write.

3.0 out of 5 stars Original unrevised way better. 3 Jan 2014
By Marian - Published on

I was already very familiar with Isadora and her life and work, and had read her autobiography many times before and so was very disappointed with the review/intro at beginning of this one that was added to this revised autobiography. I would recommend the original autobiography over this one.. I was not at all interested in the added interpretation of the author's autobiography which speaks more than well enough for itself. Her opinions about Isadora and other people's views of her , even if correctly represented which i did not think for the most part were...though in some partst were (and according to many more superficial views who might agree with her description of Isadora) but not to those who are more deeply connected to what Isadora was really about and really accomplished, that many do not get and so they put her in a box of being a kind of person she was not (as happens with other famous or known performers/artists who are misunderstood for who they really are and what really stand for and are expressing, when other people speak FOR them about them).... So this additional summarized critique or review of Isadora and her life (updated/revised) was to me less than worthy of reading especially before reading Isadora's own story first. I would read the Isadora Duncan "My Life" in her original form and that one i would give a five star, and only a 3 star for this one, only because of the added intro i didn't like at all and believe it influences the reader to a certain outlook before they get to have their own. If you get this one, just skip the intro and read it after you read the rest and see what you think then.

Isadora Duncan is easily one THE iconic figure sof the 20th century. This revised and updated edition of her work, which doesn't pull many punches, is always refreshing in its raw honesty. And if you love dance, too? Touchdown!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars yet another tart/ drama queen 25 Nov 2013
By Skinchanger2 - Published on
another crazy tart writing the brilliant story of her 'life'.....

like others like her, i.e. George Sand and many other 'artist women', she was just a sex-crazed basketcase (basically a slut) and attention seeker.
Example: she begged a stranger to 'sleep' with her (i.e. bang her silly) so that she could have another baby.

Nice rationalization. And can you imagine that little baby growing up and thinking 'uhm, let me think, I was born out of a one-night stand between my supposedly honorable mother and.....a STRANGER?'.

'Nuff said. Nothing wrong with sex, but there's limits. I am trying not to puke.
