Simply the best. 22 Oct 2005
Format:Paperback
This book changed my life! I would normally hesitate to make such a boast but in the case of this book I feel I can honestly say that it has had a profound affect on my understanding of myself and of human experience. The gentle rigour with which Malamud takes apart the preconceptions of his hero and of the society of the campus reveals a profound understanding of humanity, its frailties and qualities. I was gripped by the story and fascinated by the character development - as a tradtionally educated girl who went on to work in an essentially manual environment, I found this novel hugely encouraging and supportive. Little details rang so true to me that I can only suppose the author to have had direct experience of the areas he discussed - an excellent read that has been sadly neglected by the mainstream. Read it and enjoy!

Sy abandons New York and an alcoholic past to try and reinvent himself in the mid west, but as with the Scorpion and the Frog fable,he just can't help being who he is.
This is a hugely enjoyable read, full of Malamud wit and observation-a great introduction to the man if you've never read any of his work-and,for once,Malamud treats his lead character with kindness which-after "suffering" the tortures he inflicted on the Fixer, the Assistant and poor old Fidelman, comes as a nice change!

Malamud is similar in style to Saul Bellow during his Dangling Man and Augie March phase.

A very in-dept account of a foolish mans dream of changing his life by changing his geographical location, but not realising that this will not change the person that he is .Sy Levin a new instructer at Cascadia College , who is a former drunkard, who has had a bad start in life . He moves to a small town thinking he can start a fresh but is terriably wrong. As he makes numorous disasters i.e having an affair and acting superior, to his more wiser and experianced peers .Malamud desribes beautifully the heartache he incounters in a realitic fashion. This book though tierdsome at points the interesting points way out the dull.
