Product Description

An eclectic collection of short stories by two Devon writers who have embraced the human condition in all its many guises. Stories that will not just entertain, but will leave you smiling - and wanting more. Box of tissues optional...

About the Author

Elizabeth Ducie moved with her husband to the south-west for its rich, green scenery after many years in the arid south-east. She forgot to ask why the countryside was so green but has now invested in a pair of wellies, so is very happy. Elizabeth lives a secret life as an international jet-setter. When she grows up, she wants to be a best-selling novelist and live in a cottage with roses around the door. To date, she s got as far as the roses. Sharon Cook skidded to a halt in Devon just three years ago, with two young children in tow. From their seventeenth-century cottage, she is fulfilling a dream of the five-year-old she once was and, when not avoiding housework, she writes. Building on 20 years experience as a journalist and food writer, Sharon remains utterly fascinated by people. Making quilts and chutney keeps her sane... sometimes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection 16 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a short, but great collection of diverse stories.

They are not your average short story though. The authors are not afraid to explore more controversial issues and subject matter, which has produced some thought provoking and surprising stories.

I like to read something more unusual than the ordinary - often twee - stories you can get, and that's what these two writers gave me :)

If you'd like a collection of 'different' stories, then this is definitely for you.

I really enjoyed it and read the whole book in one sitting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stocking filler 30 Nov 2011
By LizzyD
Format:Paperback
Enjoyed this book - it's small but perfectly formed. The short stories are ideal for a quick coffee break read. Thinking of buying a couple more to use as interesting little stocking fillers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. Often surprising, this is a diverse and highly original set of stories, thought provoking, with some of the stories leaving you wondering whether they may have been based on actual events. Definitely a case of leaving you wanting more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tales of love, loss and regret 15 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Like their book 'Life is not a bed of roses', Elizabeth Ducie & Sharon Cook's collection of short stories cover the gamut of human emotion.

Each story is carefully crafted and well written, they quickly bring the reader into their character's worlds; the charity shop worker who reluctantly repairs a quilt, the politician whose moment of glory fall to fate, or the woman who reflects on her children as they grow. Some of the stories have a twist, others are poignant, but all great reads.

This a short book, but well worth the price. A wonderful way to spend a coffee break.

I really enjoyed, Life is Not a Trifling Affair. It's a much more interesting collection (more grown-up) than some that I've read. The stories weren't only well written, which is to be expected from writers like Elizabeth Ducie and Sharon Cook, but they were different. Some were sad, some funny, some were controversial, but they were all thought provoking. My only complaint; ten stories was not enough. Perhaps there'll be another collection soon. I hope so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tales with a real twist in the tail 1 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
These ten short stories offer an engaging read. The short story format doesn't allow for extensive development of character or plot, yet the authors manage to encapsulate a facet of human nature or behaviour in each one, like an insect in amber; and, what is increasingly rare, they are well written.
