The memoirs, now completely revised and updated, of one of the world’s most famous pianists and conductors.

About the Author
Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires in 1942, educated in Rome and made his piano debut at the age of eight and as a solo pianist at the age of eleven with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. His musical tours have taken him all over the world and he has made regular appearances at the Bayreuth, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Prague and Salzburg festivals. In 1967 he married the cellist Jacqueline du Pré (who died in 1987). In 1988 he married Elena Bashkirova. He was musical director of the Paris Orchestra 1975-88, and he has been Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1991 and of the Berlin State Opera since 1992.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the presence of greatness, 28 Aug 2005
By Zenkoji (York, England) - See all my reviews
It is a sad reflection on our culture to see how low in the Amazon ranks this book stands. Daniel Barenboim is one of the truly great figures of the second half of the twentieth century, in all walks of life. Although Barenboim has lived his life through music, he has always sought to bring cultures together, and to heal, whether by playing Wagner in Jerusalem (never afraid to take risks and to confront critics), or with his new Divan orchestra, which brings together brilliant young musicians from throughout the Middle East.

This is an updated version of the autobiography. Barenboim is a private man, and you will not find any worthless tittle-tattle here. There is a moving tribute to Jacqueline Du Pre, certainly. But it is time to say that Barenboim's achievements are of an entirely different, and utterly astonishing, order. Complete Bruckner cycles, Beethoven symphonies and sonatas, two sets of Mozart piano concertos, all of the Wagner operas, unmatchedly sensitive playing of Bach on the modern piano. And this book gives you a depth of insight into how carefully thought out Barenboim's approach is.

Your understanding of music will be quietly but immeasurably enriched by reading this book. And I hope that you will also feel, as I do, moved and inspired by the great seriousness of this man, and his humility in the face of the music which he interprets so gloriously for the rest of us.
