Product Description

Review

The conversations recorded in Owen's entertaining and illuminating book successfully convey the tremendous enthusiasm for all kinds of music-making that sustained Willcocks in these varied endeavours; it also communicates his profound musical wisdom, decency, and generosity of spirit. This volume is not merely a fascinating account of a distinguished musical career; it is also, and perhaps more importantly, the story of a rich life lived through music. Conor Farrington, Times Literary Supplement, December 2008 This fascinating book is a must for all church musicians and will make the ideal Christmas present for your beloved to give to you, or you to give to him or her! ... This is one of those books which comes out only every now and then, which is really worthwhile and a most enjoyable read for all those involved in church music. Highly recommended. John Ewington, Laudate (Magazine of the Guild of Church Musicians) October 08 This is a joy and a fantastic idea. It tells the fascinating life story of a man who has stood at the very centre of British twentieth-century choral music ... This book illustrates how inspiring Sir David still is and how his legacy will continue to enthuse generations ... This book will not disappoint. Buy it at once and enjoy it. Andrew Palmer, Cathedral Music, Issue 1 09 Essential reading for anyone remotely interested in choral music - and there is also a well-produced CD containing a mix of Willcocks's memories and his music-making. Classical Music, 8 November 08 There can be few CMQ readers whose lives have not been enriched by Sir David, either by listening to the Christmas Eve Carol Service from King's College or by singing his carol arrangements. I suspect many choirs are like my own in that each year I offer them new (and often very good!) descants to carols but this induces near rebellion in the ranks. To them Christmas is not Christmas without the Willcocks carol descants: they are now as traditional as mince pies and Christmas pudding. Do buy this book before they are all sold. John Henderson, Church Music Quarterly, March 09 A Life in Music will be cherished by every music-lover; especially by those who have witnessed this charismatic genius at work and will no doubt have their own recollections of his expertise, enthusiasm, and warmth. Choral Journal (US), March 09 It is described by the Prince of Wales in the foreword as 'a wonderful tribute to a remarkable man', and it is indeed an amazing resource. The life and the man are presented in what might be considered a typically English way, modest and understated, whilst the music on the CD soars. Sue Anderson, Singing Summer 09

This book is long overdue in my opinion. It contains some fascinating insights into the choral music world, told through the eyes of a man who has seen its many changes over a very long career. The CD that accompanies the book is a great bonus. If you are in any way interested in choral music, and particularly if you are a fan of Sir David, then you should buy this book.

For anyone who enjoys choral music and church music in particular, this is a must book to read. One cannot fail to be impressed by the enthusiasm of everyone who came into contact with the most gifted choral director of modern times. Highlights of some of Sir David Willcocks's famous recordings over many years are included on the CD that accompanies the book and cannot fail to inspire.

This was a Christmas present for my wife who is a church organist. She could not put it down once she had started reading. A biography of sorts, full of anecdotes and complete with the accompanying CD. A good read, particularly if you have musical interests.
