Video Description
The film is a collection of tales set in one of the world's
busiest cities, Mumbai; a bored housewife who embarks on an illicit
friendship, a 30 year old virgin who tries to find love through dating
websites, a young man who desperately tries to make his way in the business
world and a husband who cheats on his wife... Their everyday lives are
thrown into turmoil in their pursuit of love and happiness. Emotions run
amok in a city that fights for attention. Staying on top means running
someone down; a promotion means sidelining someone else. Love means a 'no
strings attached' tryst in an empty flat. 'Commitment' and 'Love' are words
for losers... or so they say! But life has a way of turning things around.

Synopsis
A love triangle develops between a call centre operative, his stunning line manager, Neha, and her married boss.

5.0 out of 5 stars More a play and slice of real life rather than usual Bollywood musical movie, 22 Jan 2009
By Lyn "musicolit" (Melbourne Australia) - See all my reviews
'Life in a Metro' is more a stage play and slice of real life rather than usual Bollywood musical movie.
When I was considering buying this I didn't know where it was pitched - reality play or a Bollywood musical movie (I really like the latter).
It is very much a view of real life people and their romantic concerns. I did have a little trouble getting into it at first as I'm more used to the other Bollywood style and seek that out.
It focuses on several individuals and couples and their stories. There are links between the protagonists as well. So we have parallel interlaced tales unfolding; looking at different questions in relationships including affairs, being unhappily single and fussy, internet dating, older age love, and putting money and success before love.
There is music but no song and dance numbers. The music is from 3 wandering rock-style musicians who walk the streets, or prop on street corners, singing a series of pertinent moody numbers. They blend with the crowd though rather than feature in 'numbers'. You wouldn't call it a musical.
I have given it a 5 as they really did it very well. The actors are all very good, the scripting tight and the cinematography is very modern, Westernised, beautifully lit and framed and stylish (though not in a way that screams 'look I'm being arty' as this usually fragments a movie and distracts).
A lot of the early movie particularly is set in dark rooms with moody lighting and I must say I prefer not to grope in the dark. But then this did add to the effect of a claustrophobic, tightly packed Metro with its small dark corners - and people fumbling in the dark in an internalised, isolated way looking for love and meaning.
I'm not a great lover of art house movies though I can appreciate them. I think this movie should appeal to the art house fans and those that prefer reality to the more widespread Bollywood escapist or stagey versions.
Notable actors include Dharmendra, Irrfan Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Kay Kay Menon and Sharman Joshi- though frankly all were excellent in their roles.
If you really prefer the escapist Bollywood you may find this a bit too real, familiar and lacking in dances, froth and bubble. But actually I warmed to it as it went on and I appreciate how finely crafted the movie was. I think I 'appreciated' it rather than 'enjoyed' it- and the 5 is for how well executed it is rather than enjoyment factor. It wasn't that it was unenjoyable but I find I dint get quite so engaged in my emotions as I do with other Bollywood, melodramatic fare.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what you might expect, 17 April 2009
This is a really interesting movie. In a lot of ways it's more like a Richard Curtis movie than anything else - the same confident handling of a number of different plotlines, while the portrayal of Mumbai in the movie - it's a version of the city that looks just like the real thing only a bit more middle class and everyone wears beautifully pressed smart casual clothes the whole time - reminded me of Richard Curtis' take on Notting Hill.

But there's a lot to like here. The reviews have rightly focussed on Irfan and Konkona, and their beautifully played odd couple romance is the best thing in the film - but there's lots else here that's worth watching. Sharman Joshi is touching and rather sweet. Kay Kay Menon makes a great baddie. The romance between Darmendra and Nafisa Ali is touching, and Shilpa Shetty is excellent.

The production is polished and slick, and the music fits in with the general relaxed vibe of the film very well.

No, it isn't the greatest film ever made. But it is a well made slice of undemanding entertainment and well worth a couple of hours of your time.
