This book was recommended by a friend. I have become involved with a local history society and we are specifically interested in the written history of our village since the Norman conquest. We have lots of manorial court documents dating from 1244 and are having them translated. This was just what I needed as background to give us an understanding as to what life was like in a medieval village. Almost every statement is backed up with reference to the relevant source document. Excellent value for money.

A really good read 2 Dec 2010
By D. Cook
Format:Paperback
Very informative and helpful for writers seeking more knowledge about England's past or for those who just want to learn about how village life was back then.

Shame no colour photo's, but written in an easy style that's comforting.

Very good read - please buy this.

So good I bought it. 22 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Years ago I checked this book out of the library. I bought a copy the day the book was returned to the library. I have used it so much for my research that it is now held together with tape and glue. (I am a published author of short fantasy stories that have as their framework some of the information on village life from this book.) Thanks are due to these fine people for opening up the past to our modern eyes.
