Product Description

Product Description
Detective Sam Tyler is racing to save his girlfriend and colleague from a serial killer when a car crash puts him into a coma. When he wakes up he is no longer in 2006 - he is now assigned to the team run by the loudmouthed and un-politically correct DCI Gene Hunt in 1973. This was the opening premise that hooked 7 million viewers and had them glued to their screens every week as the mystery surrounding Sam deepened and his dilemma grew ever more intense. Will he ever get home again, and how? Why is he in 1973, and can he hang on to his sanity and cope with life in a very different world than the one he is used to? Is it all coma-induced, in his head, or is it real? Produced with the full backing of series production company Kudos - the makers of Spooks and Hustle - the official Life on Mars companion is packed with interviews with cast and crew and insights into the making of the series, from what first inspired it to the meticulously researched 1970s background and design. The whole is a package which brilliantly recreates the look and feel of the show - right down to the hidden 1973 Life On Mars Annual cover underneath the outside dust jacket - and which anyone who fell in love with Life On Mars on screen will want to own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A first class Companion book for a first class series, 30 Nov 2006
By C. Schmidt "JustDucky" (Towson, MD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I love the quality of this book. The weight and feel of it are first class and physically it is a beautiful book.

Now for what's inside.

I love the intimate nature of the behind the scene insights the book has. I've read other companion books and they usually have a textbook feel about them, this is what the show is about and here is the lesson on how we got there. Like the boring high school teacher who taught Math. This book is like the crazy history teacher who dressed up like Napoleon to teach the chapter on the Battle of Waterloo. It has the fan feeling about it, like they actually watched the show with the rest of us and being fans themselves, knew what a fan would want.

I love the behind the scene pictures, especially the class picture with everyone draped around the Cortina at the end of filming the last episode.

I love the fact that we get complete music listings for every episode because now I can finally finish my LoM Mix CD.

I love the "Interviews" with all the characters from the show. I think my favorite one is DC Skelton's.

Simply put, I love everything about this book except for the fact that I will probably have to buy a second one so that I can keep one of them perfect and manhandle the second one to death.

Full marks Guy and Lee. Bring on the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - A labour of love maybe by the writers?, 5 Dec 2006
By S. Morris (UK) - See all my reviews

This book is everything that 'Spooks - Behind The Scenes' isn't. It's clear here that the writer and designer know and love the series and have put a lot of effort in. Not only is there background on the production, but there is even an attempt to flesh out the characters even more with elements of fiction, like stories in an tv annual.

Speaking of which, the design of the book is fantastic. The idea of making the bookcover beneath the dust-jacket look like a typical tv annual from 1973 is an inspired one, and perfectly in keeping with the style and spirit of the show.

I can't recommend it highly enough.
