Synopsis
LIFE ON MARS is a throwback to the crime-fighting style of the 1970s, drawing its inspiration from such TV series as THE SWEENEY and THE PROFESSIONALS. As was characteristic of classic 60s fantasy, the creators have taken some risks with the show’s politically incorrect references, daring to be slightly subversive. While its creators are quick to brush off comparisons to fellow time-travelling TV series QUANTUM LEAP, there are obvious thematic similarities, however unconscious. John Simm (HUMAN TRAFFIC) ably stars as Sam Tyler, the fish-out-of-water detective who must piece together the mysteries of his own predicament, while solving the crime du jour. The show takes its title from David Bowie’s haunting theme song.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imperfect, but a definite improvement over the DVD, 4 Nov 2008
By P. Waller - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Life on Mars is arguably one of the better TV shows of the last 10 years, and so I feel no need to pick apart the series itself. Instead, this review will focus on the differences in video and audio quality between this Blu Ray release and the DVD. Life On Mars is presented with a 1080/24p AVC encode and 5.1 Dolby TruHD sound.

As noted by another reviewer the frame rate has been slowed down from 25fps to 24 - this is the format used on many Blu Ray movies as it is said to give motion a more film-like quality which Kudos are trying to replicate here. Having previously seen the show on DVD I could not notice any change in audio pitch or speed of movement caused by the slowdown, although each episode is a couple of minutes longer as a result.

In terms of video quality this release is everything I expected. Life on Mars was shot on 16mm film and was intended to have a very retro-70s look, so while there is a definite layer of grain (and the occasional scratch-mark/blemish) present, along with a slight softness in long and motion shots, these are all intentional. Close-up detail and colour reproduction show a definite improvement over the standard definition DVD. However, the biggest improvement comes with the sound, as the TruHD track is deeper and more well defined than anything previously released, especially when it comes to the fantastic early 70s soundtrack.

Ultimately, if you're expecting the Blu Ray of Life on Mars to be a pristine, pixel-perfect presentation then you're going to be disappointed. But if you want to see the series at its best and as the production team intended then look no further.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but worthwhile over the DVD, 27 Nov 2008
As other reviewers have noted this disc is a compromise. The show was shot on 16mm film but then all the editing was done digitally in standard definition, with effected added. To go back and re-do all that would be prohibitively expensive, so we end up with this.

The picture quality is not up to the standard one might expect from 1080p, but it is better than the DVD. The sound is a lot better too, not least because Dolby specify a standard loudness which means the over-compression on the original TV broadcasts and DVD release has been corrected with re-mastering. That alone makes it worth getting over the DVD IMHO.

I'd say this is worth getting over the DVD, but not worth upgrading to if you already have the DVD. The frame rate drop in particular was a terrible decision - rather than keeping 25fps so we in the UK can enjoy it they changed to 24fps so that now both us and the US get the wrong frame rate. For that reason anyone with a 100Hz TV might want to stick with the DVD because this will suffer from juddering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please disregard the nonsense below about this excellent series., 29 Jun 2009
By JR Rodgers "rolandrodgers" (Belfast UK) - See all my reviews

Firstly its true that the Bluray is a bit lacking in features, but the Bluray does deliver a noticeable increase in picture and sound quality over the DVD.
Life on Mars was shot on 16mm film and hence is a 24frames/sec frame rate. On the Bluray at 1080/24p the series is displayed exactly as it was shot. Please disregard the nonsense written below about the frame-rate being wrong. For anybody interested full details can be found on IMDB.
I'm going to give this a FIVE star rating only partly to compensate for the the misguided low ratings given below.
Life on Mars is one of the few series which has been improved upon in the US version. Sadly it only went to 17 episodes in the US. However, the excellent cast delivered brilliant performances. Like a few other great series it was canned in the downturn. I would advise that you watch the UK series first, and you can see how little the script has had to be changed in the transposition from Manchester to New York.
