Product Description

Product Description

Kevin Twaddle was a footballer who was always prepared to take a risk on the park but it was off it where he really gambled. The former Hearts, Motherwell and St Johnstone winger speaks openly for the first time about his secret betting addiction that saw him blow more than a million pounds and wrecked his football career. Kevin tells his harrowing story of what his punting did to his family, how it killed relationships, destroyed his bond with his daughter and almost caused his parents to split up. He talks about his addiction and how it led to him stealing, going to loan sharks, left him facing jail and considering the ultimate gamble – suicide – before he finally got his life back on the straight and narrow. Kevin, who has since gone on to play pool for Scotland, has now not had a bet for more than six years, holds a prominent position in Gamblers Anonymous and also uses his experiences to help the Professional Footballers Association (Scotland) to educate today's footballers on the pitfalls of gambling. This is the harrowing and moving story on how one man’s life fell apart spectacularly because of his addiction to gambling and how, after hitting rock bottom, he finally managed to conquer his demons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling & heart rending account 25 Oct 2012
By Ali
Format:Paperback
Absolutely a story from the heart. True & honest account of one man,s journey, the excitement, pitfalls, destruction and self loathing that can be attributed to what society views as a harmless social activity. This true story reflects what desperate steps a person who has such accountability to the public, can do to his loved ones in order to place a bet. To be in the public eye and give such an open and honest account is remarkable, to ignore his own self protection to save just one person from suffering the terrible turmoil that gambling can take you with such honestly is truly commendable and if this true story can help just one person then truly his own sacrifice of anonymity has been worth it.

This book was an emotional roller coaster for me. Great to see someone who had gone down the wrong path be able to turn things around. Hopefully this will encourage others to get help, and prove that it can be done with the help and support from a loving family and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life on the line 26 Oct 2012
By Jammer
Format:Paperback
A very human story of one man's spiral into gambling addiction and subsequent battle to overcome it. A brutally honest account which makes for compelling reading. Kevin's story is a remarkable one. Brave, funny in parts and certainly inspiring. With anecdotes of his time as a professional footballer i would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Scottish football and is a must read for anyone who's life has been affected by addiction.
