The book was written in the 19th century and is very well researched from contemporary documents. However it is pedantic and not an entertaining rendition of events. The author assumes a scholarly level of existing knowledge regarding the period, which left me short of an explanation of some statements. The text is loaded with names of the sources and characters of the period which, unless you know something of them, can only be rather boring. Clearly it's of great value to see letters and documents of the time, whether truthful or not, but the writing style is dated and pedantic and will bore you unless you are an officionado of the period.

Contains several books/essays on the Borgias, not just the Scarsbrook, which varied in enjoyment. As I was reading for pleasure, not studying for a thesis, some were heavy going, and assumed fluent Latin and Italian. The lack of translation of contemporary documents meant constant skipping and loss of interest. The plethora of Italian names and places was confusing - a map would have been helpful, and some of the writers were biased, so much of the work was trying to make the facts fit their attitudes - very little different from the Borgias' contemporaries! A lot of the writing was pedantic and over-descriptive for modern day tastes, but I am somewhat more knowledgeable about Italy at the period than I was.

This book was well written but I found it just a little bit boring in places.
If anyone is interested in the Borgias it would be the book for them.
