On July 5, Pope Francis approved John Paul for sainthood, saying that Pope John XXIII and John Paul II will be canonized together. The date has not yet been established, although December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception has been suggested. Irrespective of the details, John Paul's canonization appears imminent.

From Poland, John Paul's longtime private secretary, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, rejoiced at the news. "I thank God that I will live to see the elevation to sainthood the person who I served with love to the last beating of his heart," he stated. Abraham Foxman, as director of the Jewish organization the Anti-Defamation League, received four audiences with Pope John Paul. He spoke for John Paul's numerous supporters when he said, "For many of us Pope John Paul is already a saint, this just formalizes it."

John Paul's pontificate lasted nearly twenty-seven years, one of the longest in papal history. During that time he had an unprecedented amount of contact with the public, including Catholics, non-Catholics, and foreign leaders. He made 104 pastoral visits outside Italy, and 146 within. The Vatican estimates that more than 17.6 million pilgrims participated in his regular Wednesday general audiences alone. He made 38 official visits and met with government leaders on 984 different occasions.

John Paul ll was a down to earth guy and as the Vicar of Christ thats a feat never repeated. The first chapters of the book which consentrated on his early life blew me away.

5.0 out of 5 stars A concise overview. 4 Sep 2013
By Rev.GMG
Format:Kindle Edition
The phenomena was first glimpsed during the pontificate of Pope John XXIII, it receded during Pope VI. It was revealed briefly with John Paul the first! But John Paul the 2nd was the master of it!! Charisma based on a deep spiritual life and heartfelt empathy for humanity.
Sportsman, actor, poet, theologian and a man of the people John Paul was unique.
He trod the path of relevance and tradition without losing either.
Wyatt North's overview covers all the areas of interest.
At first glance this would seem only a book of interest to Roman Catholic's, yet it could be of interest for those from other denominations.
For those outside the Roman Catholic Church the Papacy is can be an anachronism, mystery,a threat or the sign of the end times.
Regardless of your views this book put's a human face on an age old institution.
Disclaimer I received this book free of charge with no requirement to give a positive review.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK as a catalogue of facts. 20 Aug 2013

A rather uninspiring book about a very inspiring man. A disappointing read - like garlic bread without the garlic, such a pity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. North is not afraid to show the good and bad of Pope John Paul II 22 Aug 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read many bio's about Pope John Paul II, and this is one of the few that have taken the initiative to show not only the good parts of his legendary Papacy, but the story behind what may not be considered the best times of his Papacy. Mr. North tells us of these times with the utmost respect that is due our Blessed John Paul. Every aspect of his life was brilliantly captured, chronologically strong, wonderfully written. John Paul had such a well-rounded life, and this book shows it. School and the Seminary were not the only places he received his education. This book shows how he shared and used his knowledge for the betterment of all humanity.

This is not the first nor will it be the last of the biographies I have read by this same author. Many shorter biographies can read like a 10th grade textbook or a Wikipedia article. You will not find that with Mr. North's books. I always look forward to reading his books because I know they will be full of solid information, put together to be easily consumed but without the "fluff" that is sometimes put in just to lengthen the book.

Keep it up Mr. North, great work as usual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful 27 July 2013
By Read19 - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This book does a great job of sharing the life of Pope John Paul II as a child and young adult. He encountered loss of family members before he was twenty. He witnessed the horrible
actions of Hitler and communist Russia. All of these factors shaped the way he approached his life as a priest and ultimately as Pope. Great insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend! 6 Aug 2013
By Catholic MegaMom - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a concise history of our beloved John Paul II. It highlights his early years, religious formation, and papacy, even the controversies. I have read much regarding the life of JPII, and even visited the apartment where he lived as a young boy and the church where he was baptized. There is so much depth to John Paul II's life, and this book has done a great job of hitting the highlights.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written/Easy to understand 11 Jan 2014
By Gayle Young Wittig - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read The Life and Legacy of Pope John Paul II on my kindle, so it was my "read in the bed and on the road book." Even reading it at these specific times, it didn't take long to read. It was very interesting and I learned some things about him that I did not know before. I'm keeping it on my kindle for a re-read someday - and I don't re-read books very often.

A great insight to such a wonderful man. In depth history of early life, great interpretation of his Pontificate. It offers a great read about a man we should know so much about but don't realize how little we do know until we read this! Great job!
