Product Description

Product Description
Brilliantly entertaining, enlightening and inspiring, Robin Skynner and John Cleese take on the big issue: life, and the challenge of living, in all its myriad forms. This book is an essential guide to surviving life's ups and downs - at home or in the workplace, as a member of a family or society. Presented in the same lively style as the best-selling Families and How to Survive Them, Life extends Skynner's and Cleese's study beyond the family to relationships and group interaction in life outside it. The book deals with such pithy issues as: -Why life gives you all the lessons you need, -How grief can be good for you, -Why work is essential to our psychological health, -What mid-life crisis means for you. We are all searching for healthier, happier, more satisfying lives, but it's the journey that matters, not the destination. Skynner and Cleese are the perfect travelling companions.

About the Author
Robin Skynner qualified in medicine at University College Hospital, London. He has been a pioneer in group and family techniques of treatment and one of the founders of both the Institute of Group Analysis and Institute of Family Therapy (London).
John Cleese was born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare. He studied Law at Cambridge University and has a successful career in comedy, theatre and film and television. He attended Robin Skynner's therapy group in the mid-seventies and encouraged him to make his knowledge and techniques available to the wider public.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to "Families & How to Survive Them", 18 May 2001
By A Customer
I'm surprised this has never been reviewed !! Written by Dr Robin Skynner and John Cleese (of Fawtly Towers fame), it's a discussion about "mental health" - and how to get it.

Skynner points out that most research into the subject is all about mental "unhealth" - like Schizophrenia and the "Norman Bates" side of mental health. It's curious there's been little research about "how to be healthy - and what does it mean".

He then goes on to discuss how daft we can all be - and of course John Cleese helps this along no end.

It it takes a psychological or psychotherapy viewpoint on "the world", explaining some of the more basic questions of life like:- Why people choose a particular company (not just a profession), why is laughter so good for you (that was an eye opener) and what exactly does it mean to be "mentally healthy".

Easy to read and understand, and for me - full of insights.

10 out of 10. Also have a look at "Families and How to Survive them" - a laymans view of family therapy, and how to avoid it !!! (By being mentally healthy).

5.0 out of 5 stars this has to be one of the best books written, 15 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This has to be one of the best books ever written - much much better than the hords of low quality books out there that proclaim self help and the like. This one drives straight to the heart, and is very readable. I challenge anyone to read the first chapter and not feel more positive about themselves and life!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not all that good after all, 8 April 2009
By Jonathan Carr "joncarr" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't agree with the other reviewers here. This book is only suitable for people who have not really gone through any serious trauma in their lives. It's for bored, middle class people and lightweight concerns. I feel the flaw is that it claims to be more than that. Anyone who is in a severely depressed state should avoid this book.

Also, this is a book for straight, white, able-bodied men and rarely considers any other viewpoint. It is assumed that you seek in your life to be employed, faithfully married, a father, who drinks alcohol and watches sport and that's what makes the book so boring. It's about the most boring people in society!

Reading this against a backdrop in which John Cleese's comic talent was extinguished forever by his therapy, and looking at his pricey divorces, one might think he has only half-survived his own life. Judge for yourself. Real therapy should go much, much deeper than this.
