Well, that's what I thought when I first heard the Stella Browne edit of 'Life Got Cold'... more of which anon. This CD - which comes with quite a nice poster, by the way - features four tracks: a slightly stripped-down album version of 'Life Got Cold' which we all know and love to bits - outstanding downbeat vocals from the Girls and major kudos to Messrs Lee and Coler for their thoughtful guitar work. There's also a radio edit of same, about half a minute longer with slightly more twiddly guitars and an extended out section - very nearly as good as the original. We also get a couple of good remixes - although of the two on offer, I'd say that the 29 Palms Remix is the superior. It's a fine edit that's in keeping with the tone of the original and is pretty respectful of the Girls' original vocal performance. The Stella Browne edit rather perversely struck me as 'Girls on Helium', but stick with it - although the speedy treatment of the vocals takes a bit of getting used to, it'll definitely grow on you.
On the other CD, we get a more varied selection: the album version again (as above), plus an obscenely good cover of Duran Duran's 'Girls on Film' and another remix - this time, the Doublefunk edit of 'No Good Advice'. For me, this is the only (minor) disappointment over the two CDs - while both edits of 'Life Got Cold' do justice to the original, this edit - alas - just doesn't; I was hard-pushed to recognize the classic that is 'No Good Advice' throughout most of this edit. But enough griping... there's also a nice little photogallery (more please) and the gorgeous video in which the use of colour is just perfect; the Girls are moody and magnificent throughout.
All in all, an interesting and varied release of a great track and another well-deserved success.
