Book Description

19 Dec 2013
In the 6th century, the lay founder of a small monastic community in Italy wrote a short, practical guide for his fellow monks on how to live together in such a way that their lives would reflect the gospel. The Rule of St Benedict became not only the foundational guide for monastic life in the West, but remains a potent spiritual resource that speaks authentically to countless individuals today. Laurence Freeman has called it 'the decisive document for Christian living after the Bible'. In this reflective commentary on the Rule itself, Esther de Waal explores its Prologue and 73 chapters from the perspective of someone whose life and faith has been shaped by its gentle wisdom and realism. Her approach is personal and contemplative; it is written for all who seek to deepen their Christian understanding and discipleship.

Product Description

Review

'Esther de Waal reminds us that St Benedict was, in fact, a lay person. So the value of this book is that Esther is a lay person writing for lay people about what is the core of Benedictine spirituality. I believe she has done something very important for all of us.' -- Cardinal Basil Hume 'Through the writings of Esther de Waal over the years, many people have been led into the heart and mind of St Benedict... This new edition brings out the overall shape of Benedict's Rule with refreshing clarity. Monks, nuns and laity will all enjoy the insights of this thoughtful commentary.' -- Christopher Jamison

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Commentary on the Rule of St Benedict. 27 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Esther de Waal is an acomplished author of a number of books on Monasticism and Celtic spirituality. In this thoroughly enjoyable commentary on the Rule, her skills and knowledge shine through, yet she manages to almost remain in the background and let St Benedict speak for himself.
She analyses the Rule chapter by chapter, and provides a commentary on each chapter of what it means for her and potentially for each of us. There is a short but useful bibliography, and additional notes on key chapters.
If you have not yet read the Rule of St Benedict, this book is an opportunity to do so - while accompanied by a knowledgable and sympathetic guide. St Benedict's Rule has managed to remain relevant for 1500 years - and is perhaps needed now more than ever. I would thoroughly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars personal commentary on the Rule by a lay Benedictine 14 May 1996
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
De Waal has made a name for herself by adapting Benedict for the laity.
This latest of her works is perhaps the least accessible, and
it by no means a place to start in getting to know the saint of Monte Cassino. Christians
who already order their lives by drawing from the centuries-old "Rule,"
however, will want to read it cover to cover. She goes through each chapter and gives, not a scholarly but a personal
commentary on its meaning. Many references to other works of Benedictine
scholarship. Don't have a copy of the "Rule" handy? (You must have one to get
anything out of this work at all.) Liturgical Press will send you one free if
you return the postpaid card that comes with de Waal's book. What a deal!

Esther de Waal has managed to bring the Rule of Benedict to life by insightfully applying it to life lived in the world, not just for an enclosed Benedictine community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Benedictine Wisdom for the Home 14 July 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
De Waal's commentary brings the 6th century "Rule of Benedict" into my 21st century life and home, revealing how relevantly Benedict's wisdom speaks to our modern age. Another recently published book, a modern commentary on the Rule, written for parents, is titled THE FAMILY CLOISTER: BENEDICTINE WISDOM FOR THE HOME, by David Robinson (New York, NY: Crossroad, 2000).
5.0 out of 5 stars Great commentary 10 July 2014

Wonderful commentary with great insights for anyone who wants to apply Benedict's Rule to their everyday lives.
5.0 out of 5 stars For those wanting to better understand the Rule of Benedict 19 July 2013
By Lois Wedl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Esther de Waal incorporates her own lived experience of following the Rule of Benedict as a lay person. She has a deep understanding of the core values of Benedictine life and of the Gospel that Benedict was asking of those who wanted to seek God along with others in a monastery under a Rule and an Abbot.
