Product Description

Quote from the introduction by Quentin Bates, New Year's Eve 1999: "These trips all took place in 1998 and 1999, fitted in around a variety of other commitments, and most were organised on the spur of the moment. These were all trips on family-owned boats, rather than on company boats. This is not something that was planned, it just worked out that way. The book is not an attempt to put together a definitive picture of the British fishing industry, I don't have the time or enough pages to play with for a fishing industry. I don't have the time or enough pages to play with for a task of that size. This is intended to be a series of snapshots, an idea of how fishermen live, work and think at the close of the 20th century. Although I have toned down the bulk of the more vigourous expletives and fruitier language throughout the book, these pages represent fishermen as they are."

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest account of fishing at sea., 11 Dec 2001
This review is from: Life on the Edge: At Sea with British Fishermen (Paperback)
Quentin Bates' 'Life on the Edge' is an account that rings true of UK fishermen although it could be set anywhere where people make their living from the sea.
The book is the story of five fishing trips undertaken on family-owned boats from the UK ports of Hastings, Whitby, Leigh-on-Sea and Newlyn.
While one side of fishing might deal with gear and vessels - the nuts and bolts of the industry - 'Life on the Edge' deals with the human side instead.
One of my favourite accountants in the book is the trip with Skipper David Stevens. Text and pictures both show the effects of trying to work a week straight with on a few hours of sleep.
If you want a fiction piece about fishermen named George who wear 'Cat' ball caps, then read 'The Perfect Storm.' If you want honesty, then read 'Life on the Edge.'

This review is from: Life on the Edge: At Sea with British Fishermen (Paperback)
'Life on the Edge' gives the reader one of the truest accountants of what it is like to make your living from the sea.
Forget about movie stars named George wearing 'Cat'caps and trying to dodge the perfect storm.
This is what fishing is really like; staying up for almost three-days straight, trying to make your son a fisherman, the beauty of being at sea at morning and the fear of accidents.
While author Quentin Bates followes four unique UK fishermen, the same stories could have been written anywhere in the world.
If you want honesty in a book, then 'Life on the Edge' is for you. If it's fiction you want, then read 'The Perfect Storm.'
