What a wonderful and informative book. Each section deals with an important area of consideration, with each sub-section a bite size idea with easy to follow explanatory text and illustrations. Section titles include: Introduction; Tools and materials; The human form: Techniques; Making drawings; Masterclasses; Glossary etc
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by this lovely man, Ian Rowlands, at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where he is rightly regarded as a bit of a guru - there, and at the Slade, where he also teaches, and apparently by "those in the know". Of course, with his typical humility, he would not say he is a guru and that he never seeks to be such, but nonetheless, in my humble opinion at least, I think he is. And, not only is he a truly gifted artist, a wonderful teacher, and a lovely human being, he is also a true gem for his knowledge about the methods and materials of making art. Some of this is touched on in this book, with recipes for making your own pastels, ink and silverpoint paper.
People interested in this book may be also interested in Ian's series of articles about portrait painting in recent (2010) issues of the Artist and Illustrator's magazine.
For anyone looking to start life drawing, as well as those with some experience looking for more hints and tips I cannot praise this book highly enough. I will certainly treasure my copy, and refer to it time and again. I hope that he will one day produce a book on painting - in between his own making of art and the teaching of it, of course! ;>
