Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Tall and beautiful, with legs like spun steel, Darcy Bussell's has been one of the success stories of the 1990s. Her autobiography is highly intelligent about the pleasure, as well as the pain, of being a dancer; she is keen to excel, to be a great artist, but the urge to succeed is only a part of her story.

After taking a variety of dance classes as a child, she fell in love with the ballet, and manages to convey some of what that love is about. She is fascinating on the learning of physical control and the sense of balance essential to good dance; her book is also informative on the precise relationship between a ballerina and her male partners and the process of learning each other's abilities and limitations. The account here of the making of new productions and the strengths of choreographers from the dancer's point of view is both warm-hearted and acute.

A whole new generation of the dance-struck will be inspired by this excellent book, but also informed and warned; Bussell is delightful and smart on the perils of the celebrity circuit, the jealousies and alliances of a permanent company and on the vagaries of stage designers. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars A great insight to a dancer, 30 Jun 2003
This review is from: Life in Dance (Hardcover)
I LOVE this book and have read it cover to cover so many times. I love dance but I feel that this is an interesting book for all and not just dancers.

It gives a great insight into the life and dancing career of one of the U.K's favourite dancers.

Darcy Bussel, writes realisticly about her past, present and future and it is hard to put down and you feel like Darcy is talking to you the way she is so open and fun!

This is a great read for all ( and has interesting pictures of the dancer as well!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent, a very good read especialy if you are a ballet fan, 29 May 2001

This review is from: Life in Dance (Hardcover)
A very good book, I couldn't put it down. It tells you everything about her life, from being a cheeky child to one of the most famous dancers in the world. You learn about her achievments and the hard times, like when she was bullied at White Lodge and when she was promoted to a Principal Dancer. Darey tells you about her favourite rolls and partners, about her injuries and her strops! I really liked this book and I recommened it to everyone especially Darcey or ballet fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - not to be missed by any Bussel fans!, 25 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Life in Dance (Hardcover)
Combining a collection of classic pictures of this increadible dancer, with excellent descriptions of her dancing career that would be a credit to even the most accomplished writer! The amusing heading to the first chapter "From Baby to Bunhead:How I came to be a ballerina" is an innovative idea, making an excellent beginning to a very enjoyable book. Darcey includes a glossary and a chronology of her debuts, and describes her feelings about the views of critics and paparazzi. Her book is suitable for a wide age range and is an inspirational approach to the world of dance. As you read this book, you come to have a broader knowledge of Darceys dancing life, of her rival Sylvie Guillem and the silent arguement they have as to who will dance with Johnathon Cope, their best matched partner, and her most pleasing and successful roles. I hope this review will inspire other Darcey Bussel fans to buy such an indepth and enjoyable book on this talented star who is such a treasure to the Royal Ballet.
