Review

'Part travelogue, part buddy movie storyboard, Life Cycle celebrates the simple pleasures and sense of achievement to be had by travelling, seeing the world from a different perspective and all via self-generated pedal power' --Aberdeen Voice

'Gary Sutherland's writing is unswervingly honest, making it humorous, not just mildly amusing, but as funny as only real life can be . . . delightful to read' --Scottish Field

'[A] humorous and keenly observed account' --Scots Magazine

'A humorous and entertaining book which amounts to a portrait of present day Scotland' --Scotsman

Product Description

A casual conversation between Gary Sutherland and his brother Stewart about going on a bike ride leads to an extraordinary trip in which they travel the length and breadth of Scotland. In order to recapture some of the magic of childhood years spent cycling around their home town of Hopeman on the Morayshire coast, the Sutherland brothers – older but none the wiser – set off from the back gate of the house they grew up in on a journey of a thousand miles. From the mountains of the Highlands to the traffic-snarled streets of Edinburgh and Glasgow, they ate up Scotland on two wheels and became boys again, pedalling for all they were worth on a road trip of a lifetime that brought pain and laughter in equal measure.

5.0 out of 5 stars life really is one great bike ride... 31 May 2014
Format:Paperback
Wonderfully warm and witty memoir of not just a bike trip, but of the lifelong affection we hold in our hearts for the bikes of our youth and the tear-ups and scrapes we enjoyed and (often, if you're Stewart!) endured then. While reading this, I found myself wondering if the youth of today will hold that same affection? Yes, Scotland is a small place but Life Cycle conveys beautifully its unique remote and urban grandeur which makes it a cyclists paradise with tiny Hopeman, on the Moray Coast, its beating heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 30 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a warm, humorous tale told expertly by Sutherland, who comes across as a thoroughly genial travelling companion. There is also the best ice-cream gag ever told. Think 'McCarthy's Bar' on bikes. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars definately worth a read 27 Dec 2013

Format:Paperback
smart, funny and easy to read. if you're into cycling, or not, this is more about 'brothers in gear changes' than high tech speedo bollocks.
