Product Description

The way we think profoundly influences the way we feel, so learning to think differently can enable us to feel and act differently. Derived from the methods of cognitive behaviour therapy, this book shows how to tackle self-defeating thinking and replace it with a problem-solving outlook. This book gives clear and helpful advice on:

  • Dealing with troublesome emotions
  • Overcoming procrastination
  • Becoming assertive
  • Tackling poor time management
  • Persisting at problem solving
  • Handling criticism constructively
  • Taking risks and making better decisions.

This book will be invaluable to all those who are interested in becoming more personally effective in their everyday lives, and also to counsellors and students of counselling.

This book is absolutely essential if you are an aspiring or practising life coach. It deals with numerous strategies that you can easily process and readily apply but without appearing high brow or unmanageable. Indeed, i was so impressed with both authors ability to couch complex language in such an impressive coherent fashion. Key chapters for me were the ones dealing with procrastination and change, simply superb! and worth their weight in gold just for the techniques needed to acquire new perspectives. The authors have found a missing element in the coaching arena that of being able to synergise elements of life coaching, counselling, NLP, psychotherapy and performance coaching this facet gives real credibility and clout their findings/assertions and i heartily endorse it

This is a self-help book, which is very easy to use. Even if you don't have emotional problems the book enables the layperson to understand his negative thought processes and how he can change them. I think it uses very creative ways of recognising the fault of over generalisation and other negative thought traps which tend to create far to many imagined problems. The practical way to challenge this is through a more rational thought process.

In Chapter 9 'understanding the personal change process' the big I, little I diagram brilliantly explains why we tend to use the big I to develop an absolute negative emotion about our personality and shows all the little I's say many positive things about a person. And can be used to overcome the tendency towards negative responses. Which then leads towards a much better understanding that changing the thought process can lead to self-acceptance instead of self-defeat. An excellent, well written, plain speaking book I would recommend to people with or without emotional issues.

I have found this book incredibly helpful over the past 8 years and continue to refer to it on a regular basis. I have bought copies for many colleagues who have also benefited from it. The first chapter, which lists the many different types of faulty thinking, is worth the price on its own.

In particular, I really appreciate the way in which key academic studies backing up the main points are referenced. Some other readers may not like this, but I do because it marks this book out as different from a typical self-help book (I think most of us are familiar with those breathless pep talks).

This book is also intensely practical. While it is quite short it includes all the basics of cognitive behavioural thinking which allow you to start applying it right away.
