When I saw this book I thought the production was beautiful. It is richly illustrated with an attractive layout and even a quality double dust jacket.
I noticed that the main text in the book is an abridgement of the original 3-volume biography, and there appears to be additional material, so I decided to find out who did the editorial work. I was surprised and disappointed when I looked at the history of previous books and academic publications by the general editor of this work (such as "Queer Dickens: Erotics, Families, Masculinities"). While I believe her knowledge and education are much broader than this, much of her publication seems narrowly focused on the idea that homoeroticism and "non-normative families of choice" are affirmed in the work of Dickens and others of the period.
It seems to me that a high quality volume celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens' birth could be put together by an editor, or editorial team, with a background that has displayed a more balanced and far broader interest in Dickens through their publication history.
