Review

Through her characters, Brookfield skillfully illuminates the relationship9s, dilemmas and compromises that define so many lives (Sunday Express )

Few contemporary British novelists writing today explore the messy tangles of close human relationships with quite such warm perceptiveness as Brookfield (Daily Mirror )

What is refreshing here is the author's conspicuous sanity and her sharp line in defence of reason... It could be sentimental, but it isn't (Guardian )

Product Description

If Life Begins at Forty, then Charlotte Turner's not off to the best of starts. On top of a recent divorce, and trouble with her twelve-year-old son, the husband of her closest friend has just started to show a bit too much interest in her as a newly-single woman.

But only when Charlotte has faced up to some uncomfortable truths about her past can she finally shed the unhappy skin she's been so comfortable in, and open up her life – and her heart – to all the promise and possibility that her future holds.

Is life, for Charlotte, about to begin at last...?

Real life for a nearly forty year old heroine and those around her rarely runs smoothly - this bouncy, lively novel of adult and teenage drama captures that complicated situation wholeheartedly. Misunderstandings, U turns both real and metaphorical abound, with quite a few people to get to know and care about - all wrapped up in a modern tale of love, attraction, personal ambitions and the triumph of hope over experience. Slightly clunky flash backs at past times in Charlotte's life prove useful in explaining her behaviour and so are forgivable. This engaging book will keep you interested to the end when you may well find yourself shedding a sentimental tear or two.

Substance.

This book is pure and utter waffle. I got to page 262 and still could not find any depth to the story or to the characters. The "characters" have no soul and simply I couldn't believe in them, the writer has done such a bad job at this book they all come across as shallow, and nothing seems real, the story doesn't flow. And as for the ending, it ain't worth the wait

I really don't need a whole paragraph on cutting onions or another one on lighting a cigarette in the wind, but that's what you get!!!
This is a total and utter non event to be honest.

The characters in this book are so convincing. They are completely absorbed within their own little worlds where such small things seem capable of causing such huge problems which feels very much like real life. The exception to this are the teenagers who I did not feel were believeable, particularly in their dialogue which seemed too grown up. I did enjoy how the characters were paired up in various scenes where their similarities and differences were used to good effect to expand their characters, for example, Martin and Henry both have adultery on their minds but are portrayed as carefree and careful, respectively.
The book blurb makes this novel sound like a bit of a cliche where a newly divorced woman is establishing her new social world - a subject which appears in books far too often. Surprisingly it was written much more stylishly than the average chick lit type of story.
I think that this author is better than the material she is using and that, by using different subject matter, she could write a book that I would be really interested in rather than just using to pass the time of day. It may be that her earlier books have more to give the reader but this is the first of this author'e novels that I have read so I can't say.
In summary, a wasted opportunity. I would suggest that this author tries to stretch herself as I think she could do better.
