Product Description

Synopsis

'My life journey took me through a single, but continuous seven year episode. It was a terrible nightmare of torture and imprisonment. I am one of the fortunate ones to have survived and recovered. I hope through my story, I will be able to bring to you some insights into this kind of suffering and I hope that the stigma which is attached to mental illness will lessen as a result.' The remarkable and moving story of a doctor and mother of four who endured seven years of severe depression. Years of self-harm, attempted suicides and admissions to psychiatric units culminated in her resorting to brain surgery as a final attempt to escape her illness. The story of Cathy Wield covers the horrors of time spent in archaic institutions, the loss of any hope of recovery and certain death, to a full recovery following surgery. Today, she has returned to her career and rediscovered the joys of life and her family. This story is one of hope from an often hidden and stigmatised disease.

Life after Darkness 2 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
This book is an excellent and very accurate description of the feelings ,thoughts and emotions experienced as a result of a depressive illness which includes episodes of psychosis. I found the authors experiences identified very closely to my own experiences of severe depression and hospital treatment. The message that mental illness is not necessarily the fault or weakness of the suffer was very strong and encouraging. This book does a lot to tackle the stigma surrounding mental illness.
The details of hospital care were very accurate, right down to the fact that fire alarms are constantly set off, depressive patients are often in the same environment as more disturbed patients, and experiences of the way that self harm and suicide attempts are dealt with. Cathy, the author, makes a full recovery from depression after neurosurgery but many other treatments are also covered. As stated by other reviews, this book is a must for healthcare professionals dealing with mental illness as well as a source of hope and empathy for fellow sufferers. It is easy to read, including diary extracts, consultants notes, the family's side of things and comments in retrospect from both Cathy and her doctors.

Life After Darkness 30 Mar 2006
Format:Paperback
I admire this woman. She's survived a living hell for 7 years, experiencing things many of us couldn't even begin to imagine and come out the otherside. The detailed accounts she gives of her illness, experiences, hospitals and her family are heartmelting. I also admire her husband and family for the support they gave her. Must have been a real hard time for them all with little light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Let's hope with books like this we all have an insight into life for suffer's of such an sad illness. A definate must have.

Life after darkness 24 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book, which unfortunately is very real to me. It's very accurate in the way Cathy describes the 'dop' -'Department of Psychiatry'and the many problems and difficulties she experienced there. I too was a patient there and knew Cathy from that time. The good thing about this book is that it gives people hope that they too can recover, from what is an awful condition. My hope is also that it'll help teach the medical profession a bit of what it's like to experience mental health problems. I'm so pleased she's written it. She's given a voice to my own, and others thoughts and feelings. Although it's quite painful to read, it's very well written and is easy to read.
