Book Description

A brilliant sea-faring novel for fans of Hornblower, Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe and Alan Mallinson's Matthew Hervey novels

Product Description

1793. HMS Amazon is returning from an arduous duty in the Indian Ocean when she encounters a French frigate in the Atlantic. When Amazon left England nearly two years before the countries were not at war but any hopes that the peace still holds are shattered as the Frenchman unexpectedly opens fire- a bloody sea battle ensues resulting in both triumph and personal tragedy for Acting Lieutenant John Fury.

A battered Amazon puts into Gibraltar for repairs and there Fury has his promotion confirmed by Vice Admiral Lord Hood, commander of the Mediterranean Fleet. But with promotion comes a transfer away from his home on the Amazon and a new challenge. He will be the fifth lieutenant on the 74-gun-man of war Fortitude.

Tedious blockading duty on the French Fleet in Toulon seems to be in prospect but then in a remarkable development Toulon and the enemy fleet are surrendered to Hood by French Monarchists. A series of unexpected events sees Fury temporarily transferred away from Fortitude, first to a brig, his first independent command, then to a gun ship and finally to defend a prominent fort ashore as the Republican armies, inspired by a young artillery officer by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte, establish a brutal siege of the port. It is soon clear that Britain and her allies are going to be hard pressed to hold onto their prize. But Fury has more to lose than most, in the maelstrom of the siege he has met and fallen in love with a pretty French girl, Sophie Gourrier. Somehow, as the defence crumbles, he must rescue his men and Sophie from the doomed city.

Very enjoyable 2 Oct 2007
By Robin
Format:Hardcover
I am a huge fan of this genre and, having read and enjoyed the first in the series, "Mr Midshipman Fury", eagerly awaited the release of this, the second book.

I enjoyed this immensely and thought the story quickly gathered pace and maintained it until the end, through a series of actions including ship to ship, cutting out parties, land raids and floating battery exhanges, all set amidst actual historical events (namely the occupation of Toulon). The thing that impressed me most however was that, while there is as much action as there was in the first book, the author has taken the time to develop the central character more fully, instilling him with fears, doubts and emotions which serve to endear him even more to the reader.

This is a welcome addition to the bookshelf of any true fan of this genre, and i am very much looking forward to the third in the series.

A Captivating Read 30 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Having read all of the Hornblower novels, all the Ramage Books and several of the Aubrey/Maturin novels, I was curious when I discovered these two gems by G.S Beard. Most curious was the fact that his first two outings with his character Fury have been given the same titles as the first two Hornblower books, which gives me the impression that the author is probably as big a fan of Hornblower as I am.

However, I found Fury a much less irritating character than Hornblower, and rather more engaging. The story (of both novels) move at a good pace with many twists and turns that kept me spellbound and left me gasping for a third book...which I am awaiting with bated breath.

This book and its predecessor deserve to be listed among the best of the genre; GS Beard should rate alongside Dudley Pope, CS Forester, Patrick O'Brien and the rest.

Brill!

I like Maritime fiction of this period being a big Fan of both the Bolitho and Hornblower series of Books.

If you like the Genre I think you will like this. The Characters are not fully developed yet as they are in the above two seroes, but I prefer it to the Julian Stockwin Novels.

Time will tell!
