I found this CD collection to be very enjoyable. I would recommend this set to anyone who enjoys the lieder writing of Wolf, Richard Strauss or Mahler. However, I would probably get most of the stuff by those composers first before trying this.
Over the five disks, the range of musical style is amazing, with superb playing and singing throughout. This is very much music of the very late romantic period and there is a considerable amount of chromaticism in many of the later lieder but there is always a key suggested to the ear and it never seems like achedemic music. There are also songs here as simple as any of Schumann's and also as beatiful and the quality of the music stays fairly consistant throughout the series.
There is little, however, to compare with Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs or Wolf's Italianische Liederbuch but I think that some of this music can honestly stand up as being better than much of Mahler's lieder writing. That's just my opinion.
If you come to this set not expecting too much I think you may be pleasantly suprised by some of the content.
