This is a JAZZ LICKS book. If you don't know the first (jazz), then you won't appreciate the need for the second (licks). Take note that this is not a pattern or technique book. The licks are well arranged and presented. The authors have gone over several jazz standards to dig out these licks. It is indeed a labour of love for jazz propagation. This book will keep you busy having fun for a long time to come and serve as a reference too. There are many licks books out there but this one is like a compressed encyclopedia of licks and cheap!
The licks are arranged in groups of chords (Maj7, min7, dom7), separate various maj &min progressions (ii-V-I, ii-V-i, ii-V-I-VI, ii-V-I-VI, I-VI-ii-V, i-V-ii-V), modes (dorian, lydian, phrygian, aeolian), styles (swing, bebop, hard bop, post bop, fusion/funk) and licks over some standard jazz tunes.
The licks are in a single key. A serious player will definitely practice each in the 11 other keys of course! Experimentation with different phrasings and articulations is left for the imagination of the player (who wants to be retarded by a spoon-feeding exhaustive book anyway?). Any level of skill (beginner, intermediate or advanced) player will enjoy the book. For those interested in improvisation, by the time you have (memorised/practised) as many as possible of these licks under your finger, you should be on your way towards improvisation! Truly 1001 licks!
