Not content with pillaging the past for inspiration, on Lick Your Ticket, Chikinki have taken the ambitious step of plugging into the mains and trying to blast themselves into the future. In many ways, this Bristol quintet resembles your everyday Brit indie band--tousled of hair and vintage of t-shirt--but like Cooper Temple Clause or late Primal Scream, Chikinki are all about synthesis. Drum kits are replaced by sensor pads and skittering electronica loops, guitars are run through code-crunching banks of effects, and the meat of the band's sound is provided by two duelling keyboard players, Boris Exton and Trevor Wensley. Only the presence of vocalist Rupert Browne tethers the band down into conventional rock territory: his voice bounds between a stargazing croon ("Drink") or a Mick Jagger yelp ("To Sacrifice a Child", "Ether Radio"), depending on whether his band are luxuriating in warm keyboard textures or hurtling along at a rate of electro-rock knots. Chikinki's ingenuity is commendable, but if Lick Your Ticket has an Achilles' Heel, it's a lack of memorable songs to keep you coming back. OK, so I'm no music journalist, but I can tell you one thing; no amount of describing Chikinki's sound will suffice, you just have to hear it for yourself. If you've seen them live you'll be pleased to know this album manages to capture some of that raw energy whilst retaining that unmistakable coolness. If you havn't seen them live, you really should, the live set will leave you wanting more, and this album will at least give you something to chew on until your next Chikinki fix. If you've landed here from a search for the "Ether Radio" clip which featured on the recent Saab93 TV ad, trust me, get the album - you will not be disappointed. If you're new to the band, give it a couple of times over, and you'll be hooked. If you want the full experience get this then go see them on tour and you'll be treated to some classic tunes from LYT, plus some fresh and funky new ones.

This album is phenonomal, from the chunky riff of the opening track and Assasinator 13, through to the closing seconds of the final track Forever. Some of the tracks sound familiar, like the awesome Ether Radio, which breaks little ground, but they still sound fresh, thanks to the unique synths and clever fusion of live drums with techno beats.
Do yourself a favour and buy this album. In these tired times of retro bands whose names start with the prefix "The...", a band with a name as unpredictable and sexy as their music is more should be more than welcome to your collection.

Wow! How this band aren't massive i'll never know.
12 Amazing songs fizzing with electro-pop energy, but also taking in the more chilled-out end of Dance music in songs like Time and All Eyes. Singer Rupert has a voice that says you either love or you don't (i do), but it adds a sense of urgency flanked by the twin synth assualt by Boris and Trevor.
The Rock/Dance hybrid formula is very popular right now, with the likes of Kasabian, The Go! Team and White Rose Movement all making waves, but these guys have the potential the be even bigger - they're already better.
Assassinator 13, Hate Tv and Like it or Leave it, with it's drum'n'bass beats and plucked acoustic melody, are my personal favourites, but it really is one of those albums you can play from start to finish.
The only one that's good instead of great is final track Forever, which is a little too mellow after the whirlwind that's gone before. Despite that, this is one of my favourite albums of the last 5 years, and as they have a new record out soon now is a great time to get this one to stay ahead of the game.

Grows on you...
In my opinion this has to be listened to a few times so that the songs make an impression, but once they have this is an album which will stick in your head and one you will keep... Read more

its been done before... and much better
this isn't much of a criticism of the songs but much more an expression of my disappointment why the band's electric performance can't be heard on the album! Read more
