Book Description

6 Jun 2012
'Liberty's Furniture 1875 -1915' provides the clearest and most comprehensive account of early Liberty furniture to date. A definitive work of reference, the volume outlines the company's unique contribution to the British Arts and Crafts style.Throughout the history of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Liberty & Co. always enjoyed a prominent position. With imaginative design, high quality construction, and state of the art marketing, the company was responsible for some of the most beautiful and enduring pieces of furniture from that period. Drawing on archive material and reviews in contemporary journals and magazines, Liberty's Furniture 1875-1915 examines the key features and different styles of Liberty's furniture design, as it evolved through a variety of genres including Oriental, Arts and Crafts and 'modern country cottage'. Illustrations from the Liberty catalogues enable readers to see how both the products and promotional styles of the company developed, whilst the many colour photographs show a wide selection of items - from the Athelstan suite and Culloden sideboard to the Thebes stools and Witlaf chairs. Giving particular attention to the work of Leonard Wyburd, the man responsible for some of the most important elements of the Liberty style, this volume represents an invaluable evidence base for collectors and auction houses alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Liberty Furniture 17 Sep 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I am new to Liberty furniture, though not to antique furniture in general, so was fascinated to see this area treated with seriousness for the first time. Daryl Bennett describes Liberty the man, the store, the ethos and how and where Liberty sat within the Arts and Crafts movement. The book is lavishly illustrated with some wonderful examples that I now covet - that's the downfall of such a book if it can be described as such! There is also a great section on how to identify Liberty furniture bearing in mind that it was emulated by craftsmen at the time. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fine book Bennett 10 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Fabulous pictures and great background on why Liberty furniture was and remains supremely stylish and desirable. My only minor gripe is that perhaps more space could have been devoted to the high point of their furniture manufacture - the Arts & Crafts period from 1895-1910.

Great book! The Brits always had their own, unique flair when it came to Arts & Crafts creations. Many of the furniture designs on display herein attest to this. This book does a commendable job showcasing Liberty's furniture in both contemporary color photos and vintage black and white reproductions. There are many period advertising and catalogue examples to flesh out this company's history. Liberty played an important role in popularizing the Arts & Crafts movement in Great Britain and anyone attracted to the aesthetics and philosophy of this school will do well to add this gem to their library. As is generally the case with "Antique Collectors Club" publications the production quality here is top notch. Photography - clear as a bell, binding solid and a handsome jacket to boot. Jolly good show!
