There are several things a record label needs to do when releasing another 'Best Of' collection. Include all the hits, throw in some previously unavailable on CD tracks, get band involvment and package it well. And try not to duplicate what has come before. And on this release Cherry Red have surpassed their already high standard and have made this collection absolutely essential for any Classix fan.
Firstly, it looks good. Replicating the artwork style of the early singles it's packaged in a nice jewel case with an eight page booklet. This features a track-by-track commentary from no less than Sal Solo himself, together with illustrations of the original single sleeves and release details. All beautifully designed and laid out.
Secondly, not only are all the singles and 7" b-sides included but several see their CD debut here. The much missed b-sides 'Chemin Chagrin', 'Manitou (Instrumental Version)' and 'Switch' (one of my favourites) - and neglected from the 'Secret' album reissue, finally appear. As do the extended versions of 'Inside Outside', 'Never Again (The Days Time Erased)' and 'The End... Or The Begining'. Care has even been taken not to duplicate the previous two 'Best Of's by ommiting 'Is It A Dream (Extended Version)' and the other 'Guily' b-side 'The Robots Dance (New Version)'. All have been mastered perfectly and sound fantastic.
I haven't seen a better laid out and compiled CD in a long time. The care taken here simply radiates and shows just what can be achieved when the people involved actually care about the music.
So, if you're a fan or if you fancy a taste of Classix Nouveaux's greatest moments, then this CD is THE one to buy. And to all at Cherry Red - "thank you".
