Ebony, while a very dark wood, is not black but a very dark brown. I know this because I have several pieces made of it from Africa. This dye is black. It covers quite well and if you're going over a dark wood it doesn't completely obliterate what's underneath so you can get away with the darkness, but don't buy if you're after something that's actually ebony coloured.

I was disappointed. It did not penetrate the wood of my wardrobe. I washed it down with diluted vinegar first to remove the polish, but the results were poor. I even painted it on thick and let it dry to give a total black look but I couldn't seal it as it moved when applying a sealant. I finished up adding a little to a Ronseal dark mahogany satin varnish which was water based. Even so the black libeerpn strainer came out streaky. So I imagine it might soak into bare pine wood but it was not successful for me.

I bought this to stain a table for a room makeover. Has worked really well. Two coats required but worth the trouble!
