Book Description

9 Nov 2000 0333786610 978-0333786611 2nd Revised edition
In the course of the 1920s the Liberal Party disappeared as a serious party of government, though its demise followed hard upon one of its greatest periods of success. For many years historians have struggled to make sense of this strange story. Some see the Party's collapse as the consequence of a deep moral or ideological crisis, a loss of belief in Liberalism as a creed the impact of the Great War, in particular, is said to have done irreparable damage to its adherents' self confidence. Other historians think that the Liberals were replaced by Labour as a direct consequence of the growing importance of class divisions, though there is no clear agreement about when this important transition took place. This book provides a balanced survey of the literature which has grown up around this topic. It introduces readers to the major lines of interpretation and suggests ways in which seemingly divergent accounts might be reconciled. This second edition now includes a new chapter on the Liberal Party and women's suffrage.

This book is not light reading by any means, but if, like me you are an A Level or Undergraduate student then this may be the book to suit your needs. It analyses the factors contributing to the decline of the British Liberal Party in the early twentieth century by examining all the important issues and some others which you might not think of. Careful reading and note taking will be valuable for the student who is studying this historical problem which has no real answer. The paperback version is light and portable and thus probably better value than this edition which is hard cover. The comments of Feudalism are sometimes a little hard to follow but Searle's writing style is succinct which is good. This is the best book I have found to help me study this complex issue, but wider reading is also necessary. For a more simplistic but equally useful section see 'Years of Expansion' by Scott-Bauman and 'Mastering Modern British History' by N.Lowe (Publisher is MacMillan). The book addresses the theses of Dangerfield, Cole and Postgate in an interesting way. The text is clearly layed out with a useful timeline of Prime Ministers, administration and their respective cabinets and the by-election results of various years in form of percentages. There is also a page listing further reading which may ne useful for reference. The book does not suit all students, it does require serious time and full concentration, but ultimately it is worth it as the way in which Searle analyses will give the reader a wider view of the issues and leave them in a good position to make a balenced and informed judgement about the validity of the thesis that the Liberals were in decline by 1914 because their philosophy was outdated.
