Directed by Tom Shadyac and released in 1997, Lair Liar is an emotionally charged comedy drama that stars Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney, Jennifer Tilly, Amanda Donohoe and Cary Elwes.
The film follows a divorced hot shot fast taking attorney called Fletcher Reede (played by Jim Carrey), a man who always gives preference to his job over that of his young son. He also tends to breaks promise after promise to him, until one day his son makes a birthday wish... he wishes that just for one whole day his Dad can't tell a lie, and much to the horror of Fletcher his son's wish comes true. A lawyer who can not lie is no lawyer. Fletchers life and career is about to be turned upside down in a strange but comical, and surprising way.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, you either love Jim Carrey or you hate him, and your preference will determine if you like this film or not, if your answer is the later (hate) then stop reading now as he is the main characters in Liar Liar and gives his trade mark over the top energetic acting. Not that there's anything wrong with his acting in Liar Liar, in fact he is pretty good throughout and is most likely the only actor that could have made the film as funny as it is. In fact the acting from most concerned is pretty good. Maura Tierney who plays Fletcher's ex-wife is pretty convincing in her role. The plot and dialogue in the film has also been produced to a high and more importantly entertaining standard.
While being mainly a comedy, the film is also quite touching at times. The relationship between Fletcher and his son especially, comes across as being realistic and emotional. You can't help sympathise with him.
There is a few extremely funny scenes and one liners throughout the film delivered by Jim Carrey. One example is when he says "I've had better" to a woman after having sex with her. Not to forget the brilliant scene when he is pulled over by a police officer - definitely a scene to remember.
The film isn't perfect and does have a small fault or two which robbed it of a five star status. Liar Liar has a somewhat slow beginning that may put some off, a few scenes were not that funny, and the ending (for me at least) was a bit of a disappointment.
While it's not the greatest film I've seen in my life, it's still an entertaining one, and as comedies go it sure delivers. Liar Liar is one that will make you laugh. I would recommend this film to you if your a fan of Jim Carrey, or somebody who wishes to see the consequences of what would happen if a lawyer couldn't lie.
