New Scientist

A Top 3 Recommended Book.

Book Description

Why does Nature use the same special patterns over and over again? What are the main families of natural design? How are they formed? Did the ancient Chinese really study this subtle and elegant subject?

In this beautiful book, illustrated by David Wade, a new perception of organic pattern, 'Li', is presented for the first time in the West. Essential reading for designers, artists, philosophers and natural scientists.

Superb little book 22 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book when it first came out a few years ago. There were a heap of five star reviews at that time - I don't know what Amazon has done with them all but they're not here any more. The book however, still is! This is one of those simple little books which gets under your skin and can change the way you look at almost everything. David Wade opens your eyes to the patterns nature makes at every scale. A more comprehensive book on the same subject is The Self-Made Tapestry by Philip Ball, but Li somehow manages to do something to the reader which Ball's book fails to do. A great book for designers, artists, philosophers and people with open eyes everywhere.

fascinatng 6 Mar 2011

What I like abut these little booklets are that they try to make available some fascinating new aspects of science and art for people who would simply not look at anything which investigates these aspects in any depth.

This is a little book on Li, meaning a relation between pattern and principle so that Li means a "dynamic formation" or really something which has been captured as it is being created. It seems to be a kind of interaction between form and energy.

Each two page section briefly describes something of interest which demonstrates Li and the opposing page shows these aspects in photographs. Consider for example the following: nerve cell branching, bacterial growth patterns, surface patterns in convection cells, vascular cell structures in plants, stress cracks in drying mud.

A wonderful little book which may even lead to real advances in science or art. For that alone this set of booklets are gems.

Nature's Artistic Technology 25 Jun 2003
By Simeon Hein - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
A wonderful little book that shows the remarkable complexity and inner structure of natural patterns. Loaded with black and white illustrations, Wade presents the reader with a variety of amazing, self-similar shapes that occur in nature. Anyone interested in fractals, nature, sacred geometry, and mathematics is sure to be attracted to this book. The reader will gain an appreciation of the simple, yet amazing intelligence built into natural life-forms, landscapes, and objects.

I love this book! 25 Feb 2006
By G. MCDONOUGH - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is a thoughtful look at patterns of all sorts. The text accompanying the picture is concise and helpful, but not overwhelming.

This is a book one can open to any page and just let the mind wander. The world of Li is more complex and beautiful than I had imagined.
Li: Dynamic book and inspiring ideas! 17 Aug 2011
By Sayv1 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book, like all Wooden Books this author has seen, is more than fantastic: it is a compacted journey through some of the most profound aspects of our world. Li: Dynamic Forms in Nature illustrates that the patterns that we see on a daily basis have not only been noticed before, but in the case of the Chinese, have been commented on and contemplated for many millenia. Amazing read, amazing for the collection, and amazing illustrations open a door to unbelievable "eureka" moments. Get it!
