Good printer with duplex function. Slower than stated, but a good all round machine for small office or charity use. Have had my machine for 5 months and I run a small charity...printing promotional leaflets and materials...gives good print results for an ink jet machine...best I've ever had...

I usually use HP printers but chose this model as a compact vale for money Wireless capable alternative.
After using it for a few days I am very pleased with the quality of all aspects of the machine from faxing, printing, scanning, copying (has enlarge & reduce function) and the performance of its wireless networking capabilities. Print speed is also very quick for this type of machine.
The machine has an extremely comprehensive list of connectivity with, USB, 10/100 RJ45 LAN, Photo card reader with 2.4 inch display phone/FAX line and 802.11g wirelesses. There is no parallel or serial port connectivity however.
Some features I was not initially aware of were its ability to do automatic 2 sided copying and software that allows you to save documents as PDF files. Also I understand the paper tray is expandable from 150 sheets to 300 sheets by way of an optional expansion tray
Print quality is extremely good from photos to text with a high scanning resolution of 48,000 X 12,000 and full control over the settings for print quality.
The set up was very easy (I was using the wireless connectivity option to connect to a laptop) and took about 10 min, most of which was the software loading on the computer.
The software supports Mac's & PC's, I use a PC, and includes a productivity suite with management off all the printers functions via the computer through a layout of easy to understand icons representing the various functions (you can also access all functions directly through the printer).
In the box is a USB cable, paper instruction/set up manual, Installation CD, Telephone/FAX cable and the 1 x Colour & 1 x Black ink cartridge (These cartridges are about £[...] each to replace).
I was also pleased to see that the Lexmark web page, like HP, offered easy navigation and free & easy access to user manuals and software downloads as so often manufactures do not offer access to electronic user manuals and have painful registration programs to download updates.

As the machine is also well made I could not find a reason to give it less than 5 stars.
Having paid a vast amount for this item I have not been satisfied from the start! Trouble with installation and setting up the wireless from the beginning. Not reliable for keeping the wireless settings as it seems to just be permanently wiped even when left on.
Printing once finally set up was much slower than advertised and takes a while to print simple documents, let alone pictures.
Trouble with ink aswell, as it always asks for brand new cartridges even after brand new cartidges installed.
VERY VERY disappointed with this item and will reccomend other people looking at buying this product to go against it and try something else.

No good for printing with Vista - fine for copying

Bad printer
The drivers for this printer are just like the x4550 they are not completely compatible with vista so depending on your computer and OS there could be a vast number of problems. Read more
