Other reviewers have praised the Lexmark C540's print quality and speed. This is the same machine but with double sided printing. An excellent machine - and cheaper than the non-duplex model, the C540!

Once you've used a duplex printer you won't want to go back to something that only prints on one side. It saves time, it saves money on paper and you're doing your bit for the environment!

It connects using USB or Ethernet (your modem/router), it's quiet, very fast and produces an excellent quality print, double sided, without any hassle.

LONGTERM UPDATE
After 2 1/2 years it's still working well.
To REDUCE TONER COSTS - go into printer properties and in Print Quality set it as black only and draft quality (e.g. Toner darkness = 2). Make this the default setting. For most people, the majority of their printing doesn't need best quality, or colour. You will need to adjust Print Quality when you want a high quality printout but it's for you to decide which is most important to you, being cheaper or always high quality.
PS After 10 returned (post free) cartridges (any colour), you DO get one sent to you free!

I was looking for a new B&W laser printer that could be networked so I could use it with multiple computers. I was also hoping to find an affordable one with duplex capability but they were quite expensive or required additional accessories. Then I found the Lexmark C543DN with colour at a great price so took the plunge. The toner cartridges also seem full which is a plus.
It was straightforward to set up on my network - once I had setup the IP address from the LCD panel (it also supports DHCP) and plugged it into my broadband modem/wireless router all I had to do was install the driver on the Windows 7 (64-bit) computer and it found the printer. I can now print from laptops as well - having installed the drivers the laptop connects to the wireless router and finds the printer. Duplexing works fine - the first side is printed and almost lands in the output tray before it is pulled back in and the other side printed. There is a USB connection too.
Overall I am very happy as it meets all my needs: good print quality, colour when needed (you can set to B&W and no dried out ink cartidges if not used for a while), networkable, duplex, good size paper tray, inexpensive, and lots of adjustable software settings e.g. colour correction. colour balance, print quality, etc.
So far so good...

Easy to install and set up. Great print quality in both B&W and colour.
Though it comes with a full set of "high capacity" toner cartridges, the estimated 2,500 capacity of the black cartridge is a fantasy. We reckon we got barely half that from our first 2 cartridges; web searches suggest other purchasers have had the same problem. This makes the running costs nearer 5-6p per sheet than the quoted 2.9p or thereabouts. The toner is expensive - if you use all the toner cartridges at an even rate it would be cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the cartridges alone, though environmentally irresponsible.
The duplex works perfectly, but duplex sheets push previously printed pages off the back of the printer, which can be a bit inconvenient.

Effective, good quality, single-pass colour laser for light home office duties. Be aware that the output tray needs supervision for more than 20 copies

I've had some rubbish printers in my time but this is not one of them. I was impressed with the price, given the specification. It was quick to set up with Windows 7. I understand it will work with Linux OS but have not tried this yet. The print quality is excellent. Best of all is the cost of the ink cartridges. It comes fitted with 4 refillable cartridges. These are cheaper than the standard ones but you have to promise to send them back to Lexmark for recycling. Not a big deal if like me you usually recycle empty cartridges anyway. But here's the really great thing. Register your printer online with Lexmark and they sign you up for their rewards programme. For every 10 cartridges that you recycle you get ONE WHOLE SET free. Just for signing up you get credited with 2 points so you only need to recycle the ones that came with the machine and one more set and you qualify for the next set free.

Lexmark - you've got yourself a new fan!

I was originally thinking about yet another ink jet printer as my Canon ip6600D had packed up. I don't print that often, sometimes not needing a printer for a couple of Months or so and always had the problem of the ink jet ink drying up. Even buying compatible ink for my ink jets never really made much financial sense. Did alot of research and finally picked the Lexmark C543dn. It's a fantasic printer - for those used to ink jets it prints so much faster and quieter. The quality of text is far superior and the photo quality is at least as good as my Canon was which really impressed me as I expected a laser printer to be poor in this repect. Although the price of toner will be expensive that doesn't bother me very much as even though I've done quite alot of test printing in the last few days the printer reports that the toner cartridges are still 100% full! I can forsee that at this rate I won't be using it often enough to worry about the toner for at least a year or maybe two! I would recommend to setting the toner darkness setting to 3 rather than the default 4 to help conserve toner better as it's still dark enough on that setting anyway in my opinion.

About the only down sides I can think of are - a.) it's big (compared to the standard ink jet at least) so you'll need a big corner of the room for it and b.) I didn't find it that easy to setup on my computer (Windows 7 64bit). When first switched on it connected to the ethernet straight away and automatically printed out the IP address it needed but the software on my disk would not at first allow me to communicate with the printer. Did work after a frustrated afternoon after restarting Windows - although the software never informed me that I should?
