The C540n is a heavy lump but neat and compact for what it is. I spent the best part of a day printing and comparing a test sheet of photos and graphics previously used for a brochure, which I then compared to the screen and the finished (hi quality) brochure. I also noted the print times for each. In the end, I got quick and superb results printing from In Design (Mac CS4) using the standard (for UK printing) Euroscale Coated v2 document profile, letting InDesign handle the colour management and choosing the `document CMYK' printer profile. I think this is because the printer is set up to accept Euro CMYK profiles by default. I was further able to enhance the match (to the brochure) by adjusting the colour balance of each ink through the printer's web interface. What I have ended up with is a set-up good enough for preliminary proofing prior to printer's proofs, which has exceeded all my expectations of what I bought as an office work-horse. What's more, the photographic quality of the output is only slightly degraded by using standard (cheap) office laser paper. Oh, and the machine is silent when not in use. I highly recommend this machine and advice taking the time to experiment with the most effective set-up of software and printer settings, as these can vary the output hugely.

I bought this to replace an elderly HP 2050 colour Laser. The Lexmark is much better. The print quality is excellent, really crisp.
The printer was a bit of a pain to set up as you have to dismantle the whole thing to remove the packaging pieces - you've definitely got to read the instructions for this. Having said which it was easy to do - just a question of following the instructions. Once the packaging was removed installation was a doddle - everything happened automatically. It set itself up on the network totally automatically and discovered all its IP addresses etc. Windows 7 had all the drivers installed already, so our PCs found the printer and configured themselves automatically as well.
The LCD display panel is easy to use - much better than the old HP. There's also a built in web server that you can attach to from your browser that has all the printer status and error information a man could want.
It's very quick to start printing - even when you first power it on, or when it has fallen into 'sleep' mode to save power. It's also much quieter than the HP.
I know it's more expensive than some competitors but it looks really solid and well built - ready for some high volume usage. The comparison reviews in PC Pro also showed that the costs per page are lower than most others if you are printing lots of pages.
My only gripe is that the current price on Amazon is £[] less than I paid last week. Grrrr

I purchased this to replace an aging Lexmark SC1275 Color Laser.
It arrived very quickly, in fact the next day and was well packaged.
Took 5 Minutes to unpack and remove travelling restraints.
Took even less time to install drivers on multiple operating systems.
Print quality is excellent and is very quick. Toner is reasonably priced.

I have looked at other reviews of this printer and can add the following.

The driver now offers a Black and white only option, works across multiple platforms with no problems.
Can't see a problem about noise as in my opionon it is very quiet.
It is smaller, quieter, faster than my previous printer, and is higher quality at 1200 DPI
My only wish is that I had not bought this printer sooner.

I am pleased with the printer function and quality of output BUT - so far - the running costs have been huge. I read somewhere that continually switching the machine on and off dumps toner into the waste bin. I have now left the machine permanently powered up (said to be 18 watts in "sleep" mode). I will watch this and see if the toner use approaches anything like the stated 2 to 2.5 thousand printed sheets per cartridge. Even at these output levels it would cost (average colour page) 8 pence per sheet without paying for the printer and without replacing other expendables.

The print quality is good and it is a delight to have something where the "ink" does not run when it wets. Printed word with this machine is far more precise than inkjet printing.

BUT the toner costs at this rate of use have been frightening !!! So far this is beginning to look prohibitive and I might be tempted to ditch it.

    Has anyone else found this?

And why does Lexmark not give us tips on how to maximise efficient use? The cruel conclusion would be to suggest that they have a vested interest in not telling us.

PS - I have just totted up the cartridge use and it comes to 22.1 pence per page over the life of my printer (3840 pages). I mostly print medical/biological papers - so it's not graphics rich printing.

Good output but I needed to install two Win XP drivers for this printer: the regular one (PCL5) and the Postscript 3 (PS3) one. The latter is needed in order to print out PDF documents at a reasonable speed. I downloaded the drivers from the lexmark uk website. I'm worried about the cost of toner in the future though.
