Synopsis
Kevin Whately stars as Oxford police's Inspector Lewis in this spin off of the hugely popular series INSPECTOR MORSE. Set five years after Morse's death, Lewis has returned from working in the British Virgin Isles to Oxford. This collection includes the complete first series, plus second series in which Lewis and his trusty sidekick D.S. Hathway (Laurence Fox) are once again investigating mysterious murders in the idyllic surroundings of the University campus.

In a time when the quality of tv series seem to be going inexorably downwards, Lewis helps to restore your faith that there is still some well-made programs out there. Every episode wears its quality openly, in the well-written scripts, the music, the sets. Everything says that the makers have tried their hardest to produce something worthwhile. Clearly comparisons have to be made with Morse and I think it does bear up well. A measure of how good it is, is that the episodes that work the least well are those in which there are attempts to pay homage to the earlier series with links to old Morse cases. It works better when it is forging ahead on its own.

They have changed the character of Lewis somewhat, but then again that needed to happen as he was more of a sidekick who reacted to Morse rather than a person in his own right. The only problem I have is with Lewis's sidekick, who frankly mumbles a lot of his lines, and is not really convincing, appearing to have an identikit set of sidekick quirky traits. He does irritate less as the series goes on though.

So all in all these new episodes are carrying on the Morse tradition of providing the very best the detective genre can produce.

This is as good as expected, the personal interaction between Lewis and Hathaway almost mirrors Morse / Lewis but with a keener edge. Great stuff, looking forward to Series 3.
