Clear, Concise Commentary on a Complicated Book 3 May 2010
By Wesley A. Russell II - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Having used Gordon Wenham's Commentary from the NICOT series, and the classic work by Andrew Bonar, this book fits in with them ideally. Bonar's work is often devotional in nature, and is actually a collection of his personal notes on Leviticus. Wenham's is more technical, but very concise. On the other hand, Mathews explains not only the meaning of the different kinds of sacrifices, but gives insights such as why there were differences in the guilt offering for the high priest, as opposed to a tribal leader. He consistently shows the connection between the Levitical laws and the teachings of the New Testament. Dr. Mathews also shows how Christ is the anti-type of the Old Testament sacrifices. His writing is expository, as one would expect from this series, and he does not cover every verse of every chapter. Therefore, Wenham's work complements it quite well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to get a better understanding of the nature of the Old Testament sacrifices, the Levitical laws, and a desire to see the how these teachings have application to the Christian life today.

Leviticus is a difficult book for people to understand, but Ken Matthews has taken it and bridged the gap between the time it was written in and the time we now live in. Thought provoking and insightful.

Holy God, Holy People breathes the life of context and detail into the ancient laws of Leviticus. Mathews' depth of understanding meets his contemporary and easy-to-read style and bring this text alive to make it relevant and insightful for our living today. It's great background for teachers and provides understanding for serious students.

This is a great commentary. It is very practical and readable. It is full of application and depth of thought on some very difficult reading in the Bible. It provides a good approach to seeing how relevant this Biblical book is for 21st century folks. I truly don't think you will be disappointed if you are interested in understanding the book of Leviticus.

This series is written for guys like me that need a deeper understanding of the OT. Read the two prior books Gen and Exod. Almost done with Num. It won't disappoint.
