Hawkwind are an English rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. They are also a noted precursor to punk rock and now are considered a link between the hippie and punk cultures.

Product Description

* OFFICIAL EXPANDED LIMTED 3CD DELUXE REMASTERED EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC ALBUM - FEATURING THE ENTIRE CONCERT AT LEWISHAM ODEON FROM DECEMBER 1980 ON CDs 2 & 3. ALL TRACKS NEWLY REMIXED FROM THE ORIGINAL 24-TRACK MASTER TAPES

* FEATURES PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS, BOOKLET WITH PHOTOS, MEMORABILIA & ESSAY & INCLUDES 3 POSTCARDS & FULLY REPLICATED 1980 TOUR PROGRAMME

* ATOMHENGE, the home of HAWKWIND's catalogue from 1976 - 1997, continue their series of definitive reissued editions of these classic albums with the LIMITED 3CD DELUXE EDITION release of "LEVITATION".

Recorded in 1980 and featuring GINGER BAKER, the album was a classic work and spawned an equally legendary tour. Although Baker's tenure with Hawkwind was brief, a concert at Lewisham Odeon in December 1980 was recorded by a mobile unit. Now remixed from the original multi-track masters this deluxe edition includes the entire concert (during which Sci-Fi author Michael Moorcock guested). This edition of "LEVITATION" is limited to 3000 units and will then be reduced to just a single CD release. This is the ultimate release of this classic album.

29 years on again the release date came and went, still nothing. Then 10:34 this morning (Thursday October 1st 2009) the Amazon package drops through the letterbox.
WOW! And every minute of the 29 year wait has been worth it.
WOW! This is an AWESOME version of this CLASSIC album. LEVITATION was arguably in the top three of HAWKWIND's studio albums (if not the best) but this DELUXE version takes it into a whole new dimension. It is playing through for the first time as I type and the sonic clarity of this CD is breathtaking.

Let's see, straight out of the box (literally - no jewel case, a cool card box) and ATOMHENGE (ATOMCD 3016) have produced a delightfully scented and quite substantial booklet containing a seven page synopsis of where the band were at in 1980 and illustrated with memorabilia such as concert tickets, badges and oh, that LEVITATION patch I had on my denim jacket. Plus there's liner notes for this remastered release and a complete reproduction of the 1980 tour programme - exceptional quality throughout.

The three CDs come in their own card slips - green, red & purple - with track listings on the reverse and ATOMHENGE Levitation logos printed onto the disks. Very attractive design and quality. In addition, the expanded edition comes with three postcards: the classic 1980 pyramidman tour design, the front cover album artwork, the Who's Gonna Win The War artwork. Again, enchanting & perfect quality just adds to the utter pleasure of this album.

The music??? You know it. But it's clearer and brighter than you remember with a little more kick and punch - Mmm, those shimmers at the beginning of "The 5th Second Of Forever".

Good grief. What an album and what a good package - great stuff Atomhenge! Full and interesting notes from Brian Tawn in the booklet covering another fascinating chapter in the Hawkwind story. I loved this album when it first came out and it formed the background to a great time hanging around festivals ignoring Mr Tebbit's advice to get on my bike. The main CD is still incredibly powerful, driven along by Ginger Baker who appeared to be enjoying himself on this. The bonus Rockfield sessions are fairly familiar but nice to have in one package.

The killer stuff for me starts with Brainstorm on the first CD and runs through the other two Lewisham Odeon CDs. Really good sound and brilliant performances from the band. Again, Baker really thunders through the set and he seems to drive the rest of the band to a deliver a borderline Heavy Metal sound. Thoroughly recommended. Get it while you can!!!!

Guess who's on drums? Yes Ginger Baker of Cream. One of hawkwinds best offerings of the period with no duff tracks. The extra material features some hawklords studio demos which are O.K. The live material, again with Ginger Baker on drums is great and well woth the extra couple of quid. There's nothing not to like here. Buy it and enjoy.

Been waiting for this one. One of the Hawk's best despite the line up changes post Calvert. All the tracks stand up well. Atomhenge have done a great job on the remastered sound. Throw in the Hawklords pieces and the live set from Lewisham - well - say no more - roll on the next release. You either get Brock rock or you don't - this stands up as well now as it did 30 yrs ago. I'm a long time fan but via these great Atomhenge re-releases am recruiting more Hawkfans.

While I would fight shy of calling Levitation a classic album, it is certainly very good, and the strength of the material is demonstrated by the fact that all of the tracks (barring Prelude) appear in the accompanying live set. The stripped-down sound of the late '70s had been bolstered by the arrival of Ginger Baker on drums, and while Baker might be accused of over-playing to the point of making this sound nearly as much a GB solo album as a group album, the years have been kind to Levitation and Ginger's constant flying around the kit is entertaining on the studio album and the unquestioned driving force on the live discs.

The provenance of most of the tracks on disc 1 is clear, although it is worth noting that the edit of Time Of here both starts and ends before the edit which appears on the Weird tape, and the Hawklords version of Who's Gonna Win The War is a shorter edit (front and rear) of the cut which opens Friends & Relations Vol 1. Those of us who need to go out more will also note that on F&R this is listed as a live track rather than a Rockfield session, and that on the insert with the original Flicknife release of Valium 10 that track is credited as from 1978 with Mick Smith on drums rather than 1979 with Simon King as noted on this release. Most of the bonus tracks on this disc will be of quite limited interest to non-diehards until the live segment of Brainstorm at the end, a short but worthy version propelled by Baker which leads into the two live discs.

Although not the "complete concert" promised, discs 2 & 3 contain 78 minutes of excellent music. However, if, like me, you were expecting two CDs of new material you will be disappointed.
