4.0 out of 5 stars The Con is still on 5 Jan 2011
Leverage is a light-hearted and fast-paced US TV show, that hasn't really had the audience it deserves on British TV. A team of criminals, led by ex-insurance investigator Nathan Ford, have turned to doing good, using their skills to help out people who have been cheated by big corporations or untouchable criminals.

The team are computer hacker Hardison, sneak thief Parker, enforcer Spencer, and grifter Sophie Devereaux, played by the delightful Gina Bellman. The show is dependant on the well-drawn relationships between the team members, and the light-hearted bickering between them gives the show much of its charm.

As in the first season, each story follows a strict formula, with a target being selected, investigated, and then conned, with a flashback to reveal just how the con was played out. There's a danger of it getting too samey, but the show does a good job of breaking up its formula when required. There's some much needed tension in the relationships, much of it created by Ford's drinking, with one member leaving temporarily at one point. Recurring bad guy Stirling makes a useful return, and there's an amusing encounter with a rival team.

Season Two is probably not as good as the first, and it really needs an ongoing storyline to bring together episodes that are just "con of the week". However, it maintains the sense of style and fun from season one, and is definitely a cut above the usual level of US import.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than series one 11 Feb 2012

While I enjoyed series one of Leverage, it did seem very much a poor relation to Burn Notice when it came to character based, family action comedy series. However with the second series it is really hitting the mark.

Admittedly not much actually happens, you get a new grifter, Jeri Ryan - seven of nine from Star Trek - Voyageur, Gina Bellman is pregnant in real life, but not in the script, so some ingenious shooting. Some interesting cameos and recurring characters, but it is pretty much business as usual. The gang set up cons to get back at the bad guys. The cons invariably seem to go wrong part way through, but come right in the end. The whole thing is soufflé light, and not to be taken seriously.

The real strength of the series is the interplay between the characters, they are clearly having a huge amount of fun, and it is infectious.

Personally I felt that every episode was good to great, with not a dud episode out of the 15. There are a few extras, a gag real and some interviews with the writers and directors. If you want something for family viewing that is entertaining and amusing, then this come highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leverage Season 2 25 Sep 2011
By Nikki
What can I say? This show is fun, snarky, and is action packed, (there is NOTHING wrong with watching Christian Kane fight like a mad man whilst flexing his awespme arms, nothing at all I say!) I just love it. I love how it mentions Dr Who, I love that the aliases are often characters from Dr Who. It's my go to when I wanna sit back and relax. LOVE IT!!!! Besides as Hardison would say 'age of the geek baby!'

5.0 out of 5 stars The plots alone beggar belief 6 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I first saw an episode of Leverage when I was laid up in a hospital bed in New York. I was immediately hooked. I'm not sure what the legal links are between this and the English 'Hustle', but there are definite similarities. Of course this being American the ante is upped, so you have amazing fights and impossible stunts and it's all much more glitzy, but it's still well worth it. The characters are interesting, the plots incredible in every sense (the writers must have to work backwards to work it all out themselves!) Nothing is ever quite what it seems, the hustlers are in charge, even when it appears they might not be. You engage your brain to work out the story, but disengage it to watch it all unfold. I suppose having Timothy Hutton on board as the biggest name carrying the show helps. I fondly remember him winning his Oscar for Ordinary People and his career hasn't been as globally significant as it could have been, but he's settled into this character perfectly. Gina Bellman does a terrific job of the actress who can't act unless she's performing a hustling role. Christian Kane still has a bit of the bad guy from Angel about him, but he's great at the fights and perfect in that role. I'm writing this now and can't check the names of the other two main actors, but they're both fabulous and very clever creations on the part of the writers. Enjoy!

At the end of season 1 the team split going of to leading their own lives again. But just like us they had become to fond of each other to not come back!
2 things changed, one: the show pretends to be set in Boston now and two: Sophie stays on her worldtrip the entire season. Jeri Ryan is sent to the team as a new grifter and is greeted with a lot of suspicion. You're not sure 'til the final episode which side she's on which makes her character a great addition to the show.
The second season is just as great as the first, funny, smart, with a lot of action and a touch of drama. The characters grow more into a team with each episode and the stories continue to be fresh and with surprising turns.
For all of you who never heard of the show: It's about a bunch of criminals with a soft spot for helping people who are suffering from the hands of the "rich and powerful". They combine their various talents: hitter, hacker, grifter, thief and Timothy Hutton as the criminal mastermind, to work elaborate schemes.
The DVD-set contains all 13 episodes of the second season, a couple of short extras and a bunch of commentaries. This show is worth every penny! I guarantee you you'll watch it over and over and over...
