Leverage is a light-hearted and fast-paced US TV show, that hasn't really had the audience it deserves on British TV. A team of criminals, led by ex-insurance investigator Nathan Ford, have turned to doing good, using their skills to help out people who have been cheated by big corporations or untouchable criminals.
The team are computer hacker Hardison, sneak thief Parker, enforcer Spencer, and grifter Sophie Devereaux, played by the delightful Gina Bellman. The show is dependant on the well-drawn relationships between the team members, and the light-hearted bickering between them gives the show much of its charm.
As in the first season, each story follows a strict formula, with a target being selected, investigated, and then conned, with a flashback to reveal just how the con was played out. There's a danger of it getting too samey, but the show does a good job of breaking up its formula when required. There's some much needed tension in the relationships, much of it created by Ford's drinking, with one member leaving temporarily at one point. Recurring bad guy Stirling makes a useful return, and there's an amusing encounter with a rival team.
Season Two is probably not as good as the first, and it really needs an ongoing storyline to bring together episodes that are just "con of the week". However, it maintains the sense of style and fun from season one, and is definitely a cut above the usual level of US import.
