The Con is still on 5 Jan 2011
By M. Hepworth TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Leverage is a light-hearted and fast-paced US TV show, that hasn't really had the audience it deserves on British TV. A team of criminals, led by ex-insurance investigator Nathan Ford, have turned to doing good, using their skills to help out people who have been cheated by big corporations or untouchable criminals.

The team are computer hacker Hardison, sneak thief Parker, enforcer Spencer, and grifter Sophie Devereaux, played by the delightful Gina Bellman. The show is dependant on the well-drawn relationships between the team members, and the light-hearted bickering between them gives the show much of its charm.

As in the first season, each story follows a strict formula, with a target being selected, investigated, and then conned, with a flashback to reveal just how the con was played out. There's a danger of it getting too samey, but the show does a good job of breaking up its formula when required. There's some much needed tension in the relationships, much of it created by Ford's drinking, with one member leaving temporarily at one point. Recurring bad guy Stirling makes a useful return, and there's an amusing encounter with a rival team.

Season Two is probably not as good as the first, and it really needs an ongoing storyline to bring together episodes that are just "con of the week". However, it maintains the sense of style and fun from season one, and is definitely a cut above the usual level of US import.

While I enjoyed series one of Leverage, it did seem very much a poor relation to Burn Notice when it came to character based, family action comedy series. However with the second series it is really hitting the mark.

Admittedly not much actually happens, you get a new grifter, Jeri Ryan - seven of nine from Star Trek - Voyageur, Gina Bellman is pregnant in real life, but not in the script, so some ingenious shooting. Some interesting cameos and recurring characters, but it is pretty much business as usual. The gang set up cons to get back at the bad guys. The cons invariably seem to go wrong part way through, but come right in the end. The whole thing is soufflé light, and not to be taken seriously.

The real strength of the series is the interplay between the characters, they are clearly having a huge amount of fun, and it is infectious.

Personally I felt that every episode was good to great, with not a dud episode out of the 15. There are a few extras, a gag real and some interviews with the writers and directors. If you want something for family viewing that is entertaining and amusing, then this come highly recommended.

Good show 8 Jan 2012

The second season sets off well although the first few episodes all have the same theme "credit crunch and greedy bankers". All in all a good show and looking forward to the third season

Oh dear...shockingly bad second season.
The first series was given to us as a Christmas gift and we really rather enjoyed it; silly fluffy brain-out nonsense though it was. This second series, however, is dire. Read more

Awesome show
Not quite as good as season one, but its always difficult to follow up on such a hit. It delivers some quality episodes though and I cant wait to get my hands on the next series..

MEGA - HUSTLE
BIGGER AND BRASHER THAN THE UK COUNTERPART "HUSTLE". THE PLOTS ARE MORE COMPLEX. HIGHLY ENJOYABLE. I HOPE TO SEE A THIRD SERIES SOON.

Something of a let-down after a good first series
I enjoyed the first series very much. The premise was simple - former criminals, all with good hearts and very different characters, turn their skills to righting wrongs and... Read more

Awesome yet again!!
Season 1 was brilliant. Season 2 is even better. The crew are more sure of themselves and each other than ever, leading to plenty of style, kick-ass action, drama, and laughs. Read more

More of the same, sadly.
I like Leverage. I like the characters, the actors and the storylines. Other than that false and annoying Brit accent, it's all good. Read more
