Bought this again (i had original), as the new one had some b-sides and rarities. I love the Levellers and this CD with extra songs is exactly what I wanted, a great collection of songs, to stir up emotions and have you singing and foot tapping away to.....

Formed in Brighton in 1988, the band took their name from a radical grouping involved in the English Civil War. The original Levellers advocated republican politics and the freedom of worship. The band's music would be best described as a mixture of folk, rock and punk, with their lyrics displaying a keen social conscience. Probably as a result of this, they're commonly seen as the leading lights in the ‘crustie movement’ - and have been dismissed by many solely on the basis of this image.
Recorded in 1993, mostly at the Real World studio, this is the band's third album. Only one of the songs on the album - "Dirty Davey" - wasn't written by the band themselves. It was originally written and performed by another Brighton band called "McDermott's Two Hours". Two of my favourite tracks on the album - "This Garden" and "Julie" - were released as singles. "Julie" leans towards the folk side of things, largely acoustic and featuring the pipes and fiddle. "This Garden" again features the acoustic guitar and fiddle, but the didgeridoo and 'spoken' lyrics add a touch of urgency. The single was a top 20 hit in the UK and throughout Europe.
The album gets off to a great start, as the opening four tracks are excellent tunes. "Warning" and "100 Years of Solitude" are up-tempo tunes, with thumping bass-lines, punchy guitar playing and a violin that virtually growls at times. "The Likes of You and I" and "Is This Art" are a little more acoustic and laid back - like "Julie", they show's the band's folky influences coming to the fore.
Overall, I think this to be a very good album – it starts with at a high level with "Warning" and doesn’t dip. If you think you like the sound of a slighty more mainstream Pogues singing the songs of Billy Bragg, then I’d reckon you’ll like this album.

This cd was released as an answer to the "Criminal Justice Bill", whose original controversy is now almost forgotten. Listening to this angry, but still poetic music, will tell you why so many got worked about it all- the furious Irish sound of Dirty Davy, with its refrain "Corrupt corrupt from bottom to top and they tell you it's the law", a rant against the horrors of modern science in "Is this art?" and many songs which express their anger at the helplessness of the modern citizen in 90's britain. The haunting "Julie" with its anthemic bagpipe end portrays the melancholy and loneliness of modern life. And yet, the Levellers gift is that despite the rage and depression which is often contained in their songs, still the awareness of beauty, love and the joy which also exists in life conmes across. That what makes them so damn good!

The third outing from one of Britain's top groups of the 90s proved to be their best. Although Zeitgeist & Levelling the Land were more commercially successful, this self-titled CD contains some of their best work. The only average track happens to be their highest placed single from the album (This Garden). '100 years of solitude' and 'Broken circles' are stand-out tracks, and unlike other modern bands, The Levellers tackle all kinds of contemporary issues with their music. The judicial system in 'Dirty Davey', Eastern European poverty in 'Belaruse' and the pitfalls of modern society are judged in 'is this art?'. These songs are some of the most eye-opening ever written and if you like your music to have meaning, you cannot do without this CD. The style taken by Levellers on this album is at worst uplifting and you can't help but be inspired by the opening track 'Warning'. 'Julie' is a powerful poignant story, and encapsulates the album as a whole. NOT TO BE MISSED.
