"Level Best" is definitely Level 42 at their best. This album represents exactly the Level 42 of the eighties. Although I have enjoyed their work in later albums "Guaranteed" and "Forever Now," these early nineties albums lacked a certain eighties "punch" that most of Level 42's previous work contained.
Anyone who was an eighties fan, or even an admirer of the odd single here and there, will appreciate this album as it includes arguably all of Level 42's most striking eighties hits. Other 'greatest hits' albums that have been released since have not matched the excellent selectiveness shown in "Level Best."
Reknowned hits like "Running in the Family," "Children Say," "Hot Water" and "Lessons in Love," to name but a few, all exhibit Level 42's excellent bass playing skills. This is mixed with other slower songs like "Take a Look" and "Leaving Me Now" that simply show their excellent talent in song writing.
The selection of tracks on this album are truly second to none. People unfamiliar with Level 42 will love this album, it is an excellent starter. Likewise, you cannot call yourself a Level 42 fan if this album is not in your collection. Eighties excellence.
