However much we have come to love Mariza (what's not to love?!) Fado also
has other fine ambassadors finding their way into the wider listening world.
Portuguese singer Ana Moura is one such worthy representative.
Her most recent album 'Leva-Me Aos Fados' is a perfect marvel.

Ms Moura's voice is an extraordinary instrument. She guides us through
the seventeen tracks in this generous collection with restrained passion
and astonishing technical ability. These are not easy songs to sing but
with her gentle vibrato and perfectly focussed line they arrive fully-formed
and blissfully unadorned as though she has plucked them out of the air.

The instrumental ensemble does nothing more or less than is absolutely
necessary to frame Ms Moura's glorious performances with sympathetic
and economic musical grace and understanding.

Jump straight to 'Rumo Ao Sul' for a wonderful example of her craft.
It is a beautiful melody delivered with the kind of reigned-in emotion
which doesn't need to shout from the rooftops to realise its inherent magic.

'Esta Noite', too, is a truly beautiful composition delivered with just the
right amount of emotional distance and absence of sentimentality to
make the words burst into life with subtly refined fire.

There are many treasures to savour here and Ms Moura is the perfect guide.

Highly Recommended

I have heard her in a life performance, here in Greece and I bought her CD. As a musician and a music professor I can say that Miss Moura is a phenomenon...! From her first notes I was speechless. Excellent, marvelous voice, very expressive, with wide middle frequencies, without bothering when she is climbing to higher tunes. I recommend the CD without any second thoughts.

What an excellent singer Ms Moura is. She has a 'deep' voice for fado, but can also thrill you with her sweet soft trills. For me it was love at first sound. I listen to her music a great deal especially this CD. Some of the composers on this CD are just excellent (especiall track 5 and track 8, track 8 is fado cubed to the power of 2 really. I want to drown my sorrows in the song and come out uplifted. This is what a great artist brings in her wake, great composers writing songs for her, which she sigs beautifully. I dream of attending one of her concerts, not at the O2 please, some where where I can quietly drink a glass of wine and listen to her songs and also listen to the instruments play. One day I also dream of being able to play one of her songs, for myself, for the ouzo and maybe the cat, who seems to like my singing, especially when he's drunk

At nearly 60 minutes I think this is just too long for a fado CD. Over the 17 tracks there aren't enough that are distinctive, so it does tend to merge into the same sound.
The first tracks in particular are really good, there are some really nice memorable melodies. But then, for me, it just gets a bit 'soft' and samey. Almost euro ballad territory!
Ana's voice is really nice but slightly without character. It doesn't have the theatrics and drama of Mariza, but neither does it have the downright dismal slit your wrists wonderfulness of Aldina Duarte.
The band is the typical fado one but never really shines, just provides backing. There's a bigger band on one track near the end of the CD which adds a bit of much needed interest.
I always find that Ana disappoints me, with the exception of a great live CD recently - Coliseu - Ana Moura.

This was my first introduction to Ana Moura, what a fabulous voice. This is a must for Fado collection. This album is for anybody wishing to experience Fado music for the first time or to add to their existing collection.
My order was received well before the expected delivery date and arrived well packaged and in perfect condition

This selection of Ana's music is excellent. Her voice has attained an impressive range and timbre and the quality of the accompanying arrangement compliment it excellent. It stands comparison with the great fadoists. I would recommend this unreservedly

I went to listen to her in the Barbican (London) a few weeks ago for the first time and absolutely loved it. She doesn't sound as melancholic as Cristina Branco but resembles more the strong voice of Amalia. You have to like this genre otherwise no point in buying this. I love fado so this is a great gift!
