Book Description

30 Sep 2010 Bright Young Things
Wil says goodbye to his family and friends in North Wales, and hello to adventure in South America, heading into the unknown, away from comfort and predictability in a bid to 'let go'. From the beach he lives on with only a stray dog for company, to his final destination with its tearful goodbyes, Wil shares the joys and the trials of his search for freedom of the soul. He talks candidly of friendships, drugs, sex, politics, of the fear and elation he experiences along the way, of how dangerously close 'letting go' can come to 'losing it' when the boundary between exploration and hedonism becomes blurred. Wil Gritten writes with a wonderful self-deprecating sense of humour and refreshing emotional honesty, and his ability to make the most alien of places come to life means that the reader is transported away with him, feeling less like an observer and more like a travelling companion on Wil's journey.

About the Author

Wil Gritten was raised happily in North wales without toy guns or television. At sixteen he left home and moved to Brixton under the pretence of becoming a carpenter. Within a year he found himself alone in India, and started writing. Wil stumbled into a career in modelling, and spent a few years working for some of the largest international fashion brands. By the age of twenty-five Wil had circumnavigated the globe twice. He writes and records his own unpleasant variety of music and is an expert in the field of organic vegeetable gardening. He is currently living in Australia.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... 6 Nov 2010
By GB
Format:Paperback
Wil writes unapologetically, with candor, insight, veracity and a healthy disdain for convention. The combination of lyrical brilliance and wry, self-effacing humour meant that when I wasn't moved, I was thoroughly amused.

This guy is clearly gifted.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly raw and unbridled travelogue 16 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
This book got me excited about travelling again, after a lull and burnout in my early twenties. It completey captures the excitement of crash-landing in a new country, and makes you feel the blend of anticipation and nervousness you get when you strike out on a crazy, alcohol-laden (and occasionally drug-fuelled) adventure. Gritten writes with the free-wheeling poetry of the beats, vividly bringing to life the South American locales he passes through on his journey. He's a likeable autobiographical narrator, but the book isn't just a personal odyssey. It also represents a kind of cultural exchange, and between the wild parties and romancing it reveals the more sordid side of Western tourism. The second half of the book - depicting the author's growing disillusionment with the backpacker's lifestyle - was just as gripping for me, albeit much darker. I've passed my copy on to many friends, so it's getting pretty battered and travel-worn these days - something the writer would probably find appropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book... 21 May 2011
Format:Paperback
This book was really well written, and takes you into the places the writer has written about. His travels where well described in the book and his experiences where very real and gritty not your typical travelling book definitely worth reading.
